FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Good morning and Happy New Years... here’s for hope and health in the year to come for all of you.

We’ll be having a little break in the weather here for the next few days... drying out a little. I’m hoping to use the time to work with the horses a little, see how Bay’s doing, and maybe even work those mares...

This morning first off, though, Homer goes back to the vet. His skin blew up over the weekend. We’re doing something wrong.

Oh heavens, Becky...

You know you have my deepest heartfelt prayers concerning this...

I don’t know much about this kind of thing...but I wonder if they could put in a jejunoscopy tube? It bypasses the stomach and you put a special kind of “ensure” through it. It wouldn’t matter if he was hungry or not, since it’s below the stomach and would aid in building him up nutritionally for the next step.

Becky and Mack, so sorry to hear of your illness. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Never give up hope. A few years ago, I was seriously ill with Pancreatitis. It never crossed my mind, that I would not get better. Even though I was in and out of the hospital many times, had major surgery, a tube in my liver for 15 months and lost 80 lbs. Many prayers were said from friends, family and I.

It might be a long rode ahead, but keep the faith.

There is an amino acid that specializes in healing the gut for cancer patients called Glutamine. It is made by and sold by the company I work for. We sell it particularly for patients with cancer. Please get your husband on it. Your Dr can give you more information. Call 888-229-0001 ask for Chris in the Glutamine department to get set up with an account to order it.

Well I hate to hear that about BamBam! It sure is a crap-shoot when you sell a horse to somebody that you really don’t know. They can seem like nice people and still turn out to be totally wrong. I’m sure glad you were in the position to buy her back though, even though I’m sure it’s probably put you in a financial bind. I’m sure that she’ll calm down now that she’s around people who understand her better and hopefully the next person who wants her will turn out to be the right one for her.

I’m glad you decided to get this off your chest too. You need to be able to talk about it among friends to keep your own sanity. It’s too much of a burden to try to carry alone. There’s lots of strong shoulders here and more than enough prayers to go around.

Happy New Year to y’all too! Lee and I had a great time last night over at my riding buddy Elibabeth’s house. The four of us played cards until nearly 2am, which is unusual for me. I usually turn into a pumpkin by 9pm.

I’ve been off work since the Friday before Christmas and have gotten in a couple of good rides. The first was on Saturday with BladeRider and some others out at the horse camp and the second was yesterday with just me and Kari. It was a gorgeous clear day but it started out in the 20’s so it was a bit nippy at first. We went to one of the places that we can only go during the winter. I call it The Kamakazi Trail. It’s really pretty, but there’s a few hairy places in it. I always want to video them but you really need both hands and all your concentration when you’re going through there. Plus, if I bought the farm there’d be nobody to post those final spectacular shots! ;o) But I did get a few good ones in the flatter spots and they’re uploading so I’ll post them in a few minutes.

Happy New Year Everyone :)

BamBam is her usual laid back self now that she’s home, I think she’ll be fine, just won’t sell her except to someone who is an experienced horse person. Definately put me in a financial bind since I had already spent the money I received for her on the house remodel.

A few resolutions for the year. Retire, get organized, sell most of the horses, finish the house. LOL - get organized is one of my resolutions every year, still haven’t done it.

Wishing you all a peaceful, abundant and blessed 2008.

And in other news, I did get the two "babies" moved into the other pasture last week. I figured when they started having to get down on their knees to nurse that it was time. ;o) Everything didn't go exactly as planned, but at least we all lived through it and things have settled into a fairly stable truce between them. The big kids get a little bit more tolerant of the little ones each day, but I sure do feel sorry for them sometimes. They do have each other though so at least they're not TOTALLY odd-man-out.

I did get some pics of the process, but I missed most of the good ones because I had fence down all over the place, both electric and barbed wire. Nobody got seriously hurt, but it sure scared a few years off my life. Needless to say, I'd do it differently if I had it to do over again...

Goose in the trailer being sized up by TheBigKids...

TheLittleKids on the outside meeting TheBigKids on the inside for the first time. If I'd known then what I know now, it would've started off the other way around...

Everybody running around like wild horses after Tennessee's electric fence got torn down...

After I got TheLittleKids caught they ended up in the barn so that the fence could get fixed...

By the next day everybody was MUCH calmer, but TheBigKids were being bullies and not letting the little ones in the barn to eat out of the hay ring. They'd stand there looking longingly at it but if they took a step across "The Line in the Sand" they'd get run out of there in a hurry...

It's all gotten better now, but they still put TheNewKids in their place every chance they get.

I don’t get that Duchess. Once you buy a horse it should be yours. Why would she expect to get her money back? I’m glad you have her back but hey...You aren’t Walmarts.

Well, we bought her back more for our benefit than theirs. They had already decided to sell her since they had concluded she was dangerous.

They are really quite offensive people, and decided that we sold them a horse under false pretenses - forget the fact that they had taken two months to make up their mind and had come out whenever they felt like it to ride her, and put the grandbaby on her.

We didn’t want BamBam ending up going to an auction or Mexican rodeo (they could have never sold her to someone as a trail horse at that point) and we didn’t want our reputation trashed by idiots. Our reputation for good horses is pretty well known in this area, even the vets will recommend ours, so we really didn’t need that.

And now for the trail ride pics...

At the top of one of the hairier places. The trail through this spot is narrow, steep and rocky, but the view is worth it. Plus there's no other way around, so you just have to commit and go for it...

This hole in the cliff shown below is where the previous 3 pictures were made. The trail comes up from a creek bottom and skirts along the cliff face and back down to the creek...

Creeks, creeks and more creeks. All different...

And a last one of Bob at the lunch break. His feet were finally in good enough shape to get shoes put back on him last week and Saturday I got to ride him for the first time since July or August. I had feared that he'd really be full of himself after that long layoff, but he was a perfect gentleman and smooth as glass. Seems he grew up a lot during his summer vacation and has turned into a fine, trusty trail horse...
