This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Uh, yeah, I think so. ;o) But thanks for the explanation anyways.
Good morning.
Just from the little I’ve watched him when I go out to feed, he’s not limping anymore. Thanks for asking:)
BEcky
Yesterday I came to the decision Bay was hurting. I had noticed him being a little off during the storm, even gave him a bute for good measure, but since then I hadn't seen him trot around enough to know if he was really lame still, so I lunged and watched yesterday, and he's not right. Saw what I thought was bruising on his front feet.
Posted it on the farrier forum yesterday and that hasn't made me feel any more confident on the next step. One guy went off on me, the rest all have opinions, I have to figure out how to apply them...
You'll see.... Is this bruising? - The Farrier & Hoofcare Resource Center Forums
Oh my, that was an interesting read...some real arrogant creeps over there huh:)
Don’t pay attention to them.
I have no clue what could be going on with Bay. He is definitely off...and I think we did talk about the shoe looking to small when he was first shod...I don’t know how that would affect him tho.
Keep us updated.
Becky
I’ll let y’all know what happens.
That Jaye guy went all off on another thread too, that got deleted, then he opused out last night and that got deleted, so I think he was just drunk and in a bad mood last night.
So have you made any decisions about what to do yet?
Becky
I googled:)...google knows all:)
Anyway found this and it sure sounds like it fits, IF that shoe is too small.
Corns - A corn on a horse is simply a bruise of the sensitive sole of the foot. The injury causes lameness and is usually accompanied by a red, circular stain where blood has effused underneath the horn. Advanced corns are yellow, infected and become abscesses.
Causes:
Corns are caused by unequal pressure and/or concussion, through conformation defects, over- trimming of heels, shoe heel caulks, short-heeled shoes or un-level shoes. Neglect of the foot or leaving shoes on for long periods without re-setting is also a common cause.
Becky
No.... I haven’t. I just asked Patty about whether she thinks he can even fit a bigger NB shoe to Bay without a forge. I may have him go with eventers. But I’m going to call and see if he’ll come out sooner. He’s not scheduled till the 21st.
Thanks for that.... google does know all ;~)
Well it explains the red toe, which IMO, no one ever really did over there...and the lameness, and since there is a possibility that the shoe is too small, it just fits.
I hope the farrier can get there sooner...if the cause is the shoe, waiting may make it worse...Do you have a feel for how this guy will respond to believing that what he did may have caused this?
Becky
He’s a nice guy, I get a little uncomfortable trying to tell him how to do his job, but it’s not because he’ll get mad, it’s more like I’m worried about insulting him, or sounding like I check up on him on the internet... which I do...
Well, I understand not wanting to imply that the guy screwed up...seems that he should know what size to put on without being told...that seems pretty basic and a farrier should know basic’s...hmmmmmm...but if something as simple as telling him you want a bigger shoe needs to be said, and if he can get them on right, then I guess that’s better then having to go thru finding another farrier...
What about just pulling the shoes for the winter then starting fresh in the spring?
Becky
I just asked that question...
Wow! That Jaye guy is a piece of work isn’t he! Seemed to just want to make you feel stupid and not much else.
As for the redness at the toe, it’s probably from the over-thinning of the external hoof wall that he did. I used to do that on Grace, trying to get rid of a toe flare, but noticed I was getting redness and some sole flattening later on, so I quit doing it and just started beveling the hoof wall up from the breakover point I wanted, so that section of wall didn’t actually touch the ground and continue to stretch the toe, and the problems seemed to resolve themselves. I think that thinning the hoof wall too much weakens the whiteline connection and causes tearing and sinking of the internal hoof structures and that’s the red you’re seeing. So hopefully he’ll quit doing that, but as to how to tactfully tell him that, that’ll be the hard part like you said. And if he can’t get the next bigger size of the NB shoes to fit without a forge then he definitely need to use something else. Using an NB shoe, because it’s supposed to be “good” without regard to whether it fits the foot or not is not smart. Hopefully this guy will get better over time and won’t lame your horses in the meantime.
I’m also wondering...didn’t you just take him off of all the joint supplements...I know you were told at that seminar that they didn’t do anything, but I’m wondering now....
Bay did look stiff in the video...could it not be his feet?
Becky
It could be lots of things... but he’s still on the joint supplement... I’m using up what I had (had just bought a new package of the stuff) so there’s not been a change yet.
I thought too, that maybe he was just stiff, and I was going to just give him a few days of bute. Haven’t done that yet. What do we think on that regardless?
Frog... thanks. Farrier just called, trying to get him to come out sooner than Monday, which is the soonest he thinks he can come. Sent him an email of the picture.
Good morning everyone.
Hair, what’s the weather like there? Could part of Bay’s problem (not the feet) being off be cold weather? If he’s dealing with arthritis he might be like me and my old dog - cold wet weather makes it worse.
Snow here. :(
Well, of course it’s been crappy. It’s cold and clear now though. You’re right, it could be the weather. That’s why I gave him a bute that night of the storm when I thought he looked off...
I’ve been taking Motrin and giving Angel (the very old min pin) a quarter of a baby aspirin twice a day for a couple of days now. Bute would probably make Bay more comfortable.
