FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Sounds to me she was having a gall bladder attack....you might want to read up on it in case of a next time.

Well y’all, Lee just got up so I’d better go get my butt in gear. Gotta go feed the horses and get a shower so we can go mooch Sunday dinner at the in-law’s. ;o) Seeya later!

Good Morning everyone!

Rode yesterday, don't think that I'm going to ride today... I have too many errands to run. Levi was a pill yesterday, it was cold so he wanted to canter and I then realized how darn strong he can be if he really wants to be... yikes.

Yikes Hair, I’m glad that you’re feeling better, but the next time that happens, take your self to the ER. Sounds like gall bladder issues. Was it under your rib cage, or lower down?

That sounds like a good time, even though there were a lot of human greenies out with you.

That’s a huge group! All those are just one barn? Boy, I’ve been on organized club rides that didn’t have that many. I like a small group of friends better.

The buffalo is hilarious. I don’t think my Arab horse would have liked it either. ;~)

Cute that you blew in it’s nose, and that they recognized the gesture. :~) Good tip! :~D

Today we have stalls to do.... we haven’t done them since Wed, with holidays and visitors and not feeling good. I’m sure they’ll be lovely... at least, the pony’s stall, which is the one they use as the toilet.

Night before last though, something really strange happened. ~Something~ was in the woods that had the horse’s attention. They wouldn’t come in to the barn to eat, they’d come in, grab a bite and bolt out again. Bay was making snorting elk sounds and was all ‘on the muscle’ which kept the mares alert too.

The first concern, since this was happening right at dark, was getting their blankets on because it was fixing to be a cooold night. I decided it wasn’t safe to do in the barn, they were way too jittery in there and I didn’t want them bolting with the blanket half done. So we carried the blankets out in the open where they could look and watch for the monster in the woods but stand still and put a line around their neck just in case.

After that, we put hay outside for them to eat and they settled down and ate and spent most of the night outside. Whatever. I didn’t like them having to come in the barn to eat, because I was afraid of them slipping on the mats bolting out through the doorways.

Horses... they can be normal for months and then all of the sudden they throw something else at you... First time though, that I’ve seen Cyn spin and be nervous in the barn since her incident last year, which was in November, by the way, and we still don’t know why she did it that time. This time, though, it was all of them, and it was because of something in the woods. Deer would be the most obvious guess, but deer go through all the time! They don’t freak that much about deer. And they don’t pay coyotes any mind at all. I dunno!

I think it was just gas... it felt like gas. Was very low in the gut, not up high. Would have felt like period cramps except the timing was wrong and I haven’t had that bad a cramp since high school.

There were 10 or so from my cousin’s barn, but the rest were from somewhere else. Apparently this guy puts on a ride like this several times a year. It was an older fellow and his wife and they seemed like very nice people. It takes a lot of preparation to feed that many people!

The sniffing noses thing seems to work with all horses as a general greeting. I’ve used it quite a bit when meeting strange horses. It seems to relax them. I forgot and did it with a strange dog one time though and liked to have got my face bit off. I didn’t get bit, but I got snapped at so I made a note to self that dogs and horses don’t work the same way. ;o)

I blow in Bay’s nose all the time, he likes it and blows back. Cyn and the pony both turn away when I blow in their nose. One of the horse books said that’s how you tell if a horse is friendly :~)

I like your trick, Frog. It’s a good tip! Levi likes it when I blow in his nose too. He thinks it’s a big game.

Did you hear something in the woods or were they all just looking/reacting in that general direction? The goobers. :-)

We never saw or heard anything. And we looked! Walked the whole fenceline to make sure a deer hadn’t been tangled and drug wire loose or something.... nothing. But Bay was running around snorting and wouldn’t let it go.

There were lots of kids and inexperienced riders

Sounds like the ride I went on this fall. Only they went too fast! I lol'ed at the pink bridle and saddle blanket on the one horse and the girl talking on the cell phone. Those things are glued to kid's ears. What is with your cousin putting her boot on the table? Resting her hip? The area really looks pretty.

strange! Maybe he smelled something. It’ll be interesting if they do the same thing tonight.

Well, this was two nights ago... they were fine by morning, and they were OK last night.

I shudder to think of big cats around, and I don’t think that’s it, but a mere deer just shouldn’t have caused that much fuss.

Not unless is was a giant horse eating deer! as it would be in the dark. ;-) We've had some big cat sightings around here. Mostly they've made off with dogs.

Down around my friend Bob’s house, they think there was a cat attack on a horse, he had what looked like claw marks in his back and hindquarters, but survived. But they’re much closer to open forest land than we are, we’re fairly suburban.

Strange or coincidence??? That’s the question!... I sat out there and stared with Bay a long time, I saw no explanation for it!

Go figger.
