FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

We hung our special family quilts on the walls in the bedroom. We have tired paneling in there and the quilts are really homey and bedroomy. :~) I should take pictures of them sometime, they’re really quite neat, particularly one that Bruce’s grandma made.

Good Morning!! It sure WAS slow in here over the weekend. We went on our 24 mile trail ride down the Natchez Trace on Saturday and it was GREAT, but DANG 24 miles is a long way! The leaves were pretty, but a lot of them were already gone. Last weekend probably was the peak.

I left my house around 6am and met up with Elizabeth, Shirley and Kari about an hour up the road. Then we drove another hour and a half up to the south trailhead where we met up with Donnie and Jim and BladeRider and Gary. We left Elizabeth's SUV there, then drove another 20 miles up the road to the north trailhead. When we got there, there was this big group of Japanese people there walking around and apparently they had never seen horse trailers before because they all started excitedly talking and snapping pictures like crazy, even before we got parked, and continued to do so all the while we were tacking up. But after a while they moved off a little ways between my trailer and the creek and one of them handed the rest of them out a sheet of paper and then proceeded to read it to them. Then they all started to SING in Japanese! And the weird thing was that I recognized the tune. It was the hymn How Great Thou Art! It was so bizarre hearing that song with different words, but kinda cool too. And Elizabeth and I both were kinda singing along, but not where they could hear us. I wish I'd taken their picture. Time about is fair play, but I didn't want them to think I was making fun of them or anything.

But anyways, we headed out about 10am and made it to the far end around 4:30, just BARELY before dark, then took Elizabeth's car back up to get the rigs, so it was 5:30 by the time we headed for home. Shirley, Kari, Elizabeth and I all stopped at a steakhouse on the way home and had a really good meal while the horses munched on hay in the trailer. It was fun, but Lord I was tired by the time I got home at around 8:30. It's a good thing we only do this once a year. I spent most of the day yesterday sleeping and recuperating!

So here's a few pics I took. They were on the first half of the ride. I kinda petered out by the end. I think BladeRider got some later on so hopefully she'll post hers afterwhile.

Shirley on Doc leading us through the tunnel, followed by Elizabeth on Hope...

I thought this one was kinda cool, even if it was kinda blurry....Ride Towards the Light!...

Coming out the other side...

These yellow beech trees were mostly all that was left of the leaves...

BladeRider...

Kari and Faith...

Elizabeth & Hope...

There were several of these little bridges to cross...

Donnie and Bullet...

Mr Jim and his horse...

Gary and Shane...

Correction, it was 9:30 when I got home. The steakhouse took at least an hour, but it was worth it. I had a ribeye with a baked potato and a salad and I didn’t leave a crumb on my plate!

Good Morning. Hey glad you had fun at the clinic and are learning new things. Instructors can get frustrated, but heck that is what they are for, to do the training.

We had snow on the ground on Friday...ugh! It didn't last long and changed to rain. Saturday night we went to a Chinese auction, reverse raffle, dinner event for the horse club organization that the kids belong to. Amy won a gift certificate from TSC and I won a sheet blanket. It is bright orange and size 62. It might fit Jody. We had a good time and the food was good.

Terrific pictures, and great scenery and obstacles :~)

Hilarious about the Japanese tourists... You’re now part of their stories they’ll tell. You’re a strange curiosity!

24 miles is a really long way. I used to do that once a year too, but now it’s been years since we’ve done that long a loop.

Wow, snow already! We’re still having 60* nights here, which is a little warm even for us. It’s kinda strange. Glad you had fun at the auction/dinner. Sounds like fun!

Great pictures...love the ones of Hope:)

Good morning...it was a busy weekend here...JP’s birthday, and I’m feeding Debbie’s horses again..Sure wish I had had my camera this morning, they were all running and strutting their stuff. She has the one that was hurt so bad home. Generally you can’t tell anything happened, but on close inspection, he has dents on both sides where they took out parts of ribs, and all along the top of his withers his hair is all white, (he’s a black horse). He is still on antibiotics, as he continues to get lung assesses that have to be drained:(...they are hoping it won’t happen again. he worries me, because at night when I put him in the barn he coughs some. But he was running this morning when I turned him out, and looked pretty good. He’s still a bit thin, but not nearly as bad as I was expecting...no ribs showing. Have I mentioned the total vet bill was over $50,000!

I’ll definitely take the camera tomorrow in case they put on a show again.

Becky

Boy, that’s one lucky horse, not only to have survived the initial trauma, but to have owners with deep pockets! Most people would have just had to have him put down. I’m glad to hear he’s better!

Oh, one more thing about the ride that I was kinda pleased with was that I rode Grace again, and she was barefoot and went the whole 24 miles over roots and rocks without a hitch, so it appears I’ve finally got her feet in decent shape.

What nice ride pictures! It looks sort of chilly there, but beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Well, supposedly it was in the 60’s that day, but it was overcast off and on and pretty windy so the jackets felt pretty good.

Well, MissTargets, I can’t say that I’m sorry I’m not in NE Ohio....my husband is at our cabin for deer season and he told me he had freezing rain yesterday......

On the other hand, it was 77 here today and we took a lovely trail ride where I had to take my sweater off, it was too hot.......

Rub it in Rub it in......

Heh, they say ex-smokers and ex-northerners are the worst to rub it in, so I guess the old saying is true! ;o)

Are you all settled in now with the barn building and all?

Hey, it is suppose to be in the 60's today and flurries on Thursday! I can think of a lot of places I would rather live, but the thought of packing up and moving wears me out thinking about it. Every other house is for sale in this county.
