FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Well good job on getting yourself out for a ride. It’s hard to do sometimes when you’re really not in the mood. The VW trail sounds interesting. 2J will probably enjoy getting to see it. Heck, she may even try to figure out a way she can drag it back home since she’s almost done with her other project bug. ;o) And as far as trails go, I’m up to whatever trails you can dig up.

I had another brainstorm out there too:)

I’m thinking there may be sometime when some might want to go ride, and I might need to stay here. I’m thinking I can mark some trail loops the way the do at CTR’s. They tie plastic ribbon to clothespins and just ride along and clip them on trees. A lot faster then having to stop and tie ribbons directly onto trees. Then they are removable so you’re not trashing the landscape.

I can’t look at the video here at work, but y’all must be talking about the bull fighting horse. He was unbelieveable, and so was his rider. Absolutely fearless.

Yeah - I’m dazzled by that animal so much that I try not to watch the part that is gore.

Well, I’m thinking we can just about cover everywhere I ride on Fri. and Sat, Sat being divided up into two rides, so that anyone not up to going more can stay home and loll around here, hopefully the weather will permit them to sit under the trees.

Yeah - that’s what we did when we marked trail, was tie it to a clothes pin.

yeah, he is unbelievable alright, and fearless, but I’m not sure that can be said in a flattering way.

I just want to be sure that you and Blade get enough riding in that it was worth bringing your horses that far.

Once again, it will be a worry that the bratty little 4-wheelers around here don’t yank them down. I wouldn’t put them up till the last minute.

The horse and rider don’t seem to be limited by the same gaits and cues and movements as the rest of us. He can choose when and where to touch the ground and how fast.

I wondered about that too. Maybe if you clip them in the trees at rider’s eye-level on a horse they won’t take the trouble to get up that high to take them down.

I realize that where ever that was done it is probably a tradition...but IMO, it’s one of those things that seems like an unnecessary risk to a great horse, and meaningless torment to the bull. I really dislike that sort of thing. Not that concerned for the rider, he choose to do it.

I agree. I hate the sport and I would never go to one. I would find it pitiful and awful.

There was a video that showed Merlin in training with a man with a bull horn contraption on a wheelbarrow thingy. It showed more of his razzle dazzle kind of spins and movements. But dang, I can’t find it now.

I wonder if he could still do it if the bull wasn’t so handicapped by all those picks in his neck. That is after all why they do that isn’t it, to weaken the bull’s neck muscles so he can’t toss his head as much. I imagine the blood loss weakens him a good bit too. If they could, I just think it would be cooler, and more challenging, if they could use some kind of paint stick or something to “tag” him with to show that they got close enough to touch him and not get gored. But that may be too much to ask of a horse. He may not be fast enough to get away in that case. I know the horses that the picadors use to get them close enough to the bull to jab the pics in are pretty much encased in what looks like mattresses to keep them from getting gored. So it must be a pretty tough job at that point.

It's the Picadors (That's what he's called) who place those barbs in the neck. He placed the first one in the fresh bull. His job is to weaken and tire the bull so the Matador stands a chance.

Here's the thread when I posted the video over on the horse forum a couple months back, there was a pretty lively discussion, and a couple people posted some background about it. Amazing video - Picador horse - bullfighting.

Yeah, I gotta check out that thread later when I can watch the videos. I read a bit of it and it sounded real interesting.

Good Morning.

The rain really cooled things off, low in the 40's last night.

Welcome back Frog, I hope you had a great vacation.
