PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) -- A Mexican judge has ruled to close the criminal case against bounty hunter and TV reality star Duane "Dog" Chapman, but state prosecutors have appealed the decision, officials said Thursday.
In the July 27 ruling, Judge Jose Alberto Montes ruled the statute of limitations had expired on the case, said Guillermo Diaz, assistant prosecutor for the state of Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is located.
Chapman was arrested in September by U.S. authorities on a Mexican warrant stemming from his 2003 capture of fugitive convicted rapist and Max Factor cosmetics heir Andrew Luster in Puerto Vallarta.
Luster jumped a $1 million bond and disappeared during his trial in Ventura, Calif., on charges that he drugged and raped three women. The disappearance set off a national and international manhunt by police, FBI and bounty hunters trying to recoup some of the bond money. Luster is now serving a 124-year prison term.
Bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico.
State prosecutors, however, want to continue pursuing Mexico's request to have Chapman extradited,

Free the Dog!
Best news I’ve heard all day! Yahoo!!
From what I heard on TV tonight, Dog is going to have to keep his mouth shut until all of this is over. I’ll bet he cancels these shows for now.
The thing I find weird about it is that in most states a bounty hunter gets a very high percentage of police powers with none of the training. Also because of their status as regular citizens they’re immune from a lot of the rules the police need to follow (the biggest one being warrants). In most states it’s harder to be a notary than a bounty hunter, and that’s weird.
Just saw Dog and Beth on LKL. Such good news!!! Dog rules....
I saw them on with Geraldo last night. Thank goodness this thing is over . . . hopefully. I had written letters of support. Maybe there’s hope for the republic after all. Go, Dog!! I love their show.
Bush's fault!
Looks like we are celebrating too soon. Despite the fact that Mexico has dropped the charges, the U.S. Attorney is refusing to dismiss the extradition proceedings. This is crazy.

The Dog is free at last. Thank God Almighty.
Not quite. Dog was on Glenn Beck’s show tonite on TV, and said (get this) the U.S. Government is not stopping its extradition order to ship Dog off to Mexico. Dog’s lawyer will have to jump through a bunch of legal hoops to try to get the U.S. gov’t off his back from extraditing him to Mexico. Can you believe that? Dog was informed of this today. I knew our U.S. gov’t was out to get Dog, and here’s the proof of it. He made the Federal Agents look bad by getting a rapist they themselves couldn’t find and catch, so now it’s payback for the Dog. I think personally, that Chertoff might be behind this, just a gut feeling, don’t quite know why.
I saw that show too. If Mexico dropped everything, why can’t it just be a done deal? This is stupid, and a waste of tax $
I recall that Mexico turned over a big drug kingpin to the US a few months after Mex filed their extradition request. Always wondered if Dog was the quid pro quo for the druglord.
I wouldn’t want to carry all that around. Must kill her back!
Bump for the Dog.
Why did you say that? He’s still in huge trouble.
And two very big boobs!
