Missing Alabama Minister's Wife Found Working at Fast-Food Restaurant in New York

The wife of an Alabama minister missing for more than four months has been located by police unharmed and working under an alias at a fast-food restaurant in New York state, authorities said Monday.

Louisiana police located Mary Byrne Smith alive and well in New York state on Friday. The 30-year-old kindergarten teacher had been working under an assumed name at a fast-food restaurant.

"We know it’s her," Bossier City Police Chief Mike Halphen said at a press conference Monday. "She did not want us to disclose the reasons why she left, and she did not want us to disclose where she is living."

She does not face criminal charges, he said.

"People have their reasons for wanting to start a new life and that was her choosing," Halphen said. "And again, we encouraged her very, very hard to contact her family and at least talk with her children and we believe that she will."

I wonder how much being fired had to do with this. That’s bound to have been pretty embarrassing.

“May HE was the nutcase an she just got fed up.......”

I doubt that is the case. If it is the case, then she would not have left the kids there with a “nutcase” of a daddy.

True, but sometimes the decision is made after marriage. Throw in a bull-headed husband and a wife who is a follower and you can have a problem. I’ve seen it more than once.

No dumber than the minister who married this basketcase.

We're programmed to be confused by looks.

Some of these preachers need to consider whether their wives are cut out for that life before they go into it.

Very true.

Too many women are blinded by what they perceive as a charmed life...a pastor's wife! It's one of the toughest "jobs" a woman can have. A woman should never marry a minister unless she is called to do so.

Just seems like this might be someone with a significant substance abuse problem. The pictures seem to tell some of the story.

Picture 1 (Looks like from a year book or something):

Picture the day of her "disapperance":

The angle of the photo may be playing tricks, but her face looks much thinner and gaunt then in the first picture.

But, if this isn't substance abuse, then this thing was headed for a different headline entirely:

"July 2007 Pretty Alabama teacher caught sleeping with student."

BTW, chicks with lazy eyes are totally hot (top picture her right eye).

We know enough to say that whatever the problems might have been with the dad, if they were that bad the woman was doubly at fault for leaving the children in that situation.

If she needed to get out because things were so bad, then she should have gotten the children out too. And remember, in today’s world all a woman has to do is pick up the phone and the guy is out on the street. Believe me, I’m the voice of experience on that.

The woman calls the police because of a disturbance. He is asked to leave the home overnight. The next morning the woman obtains a restraining order. In a week or two there will be a hearing and she will get the home.

Been there, done that...

Despite there being evidence to the contrary, most folks want to give the woman in these situations a pass. Society has been spoon fed the idea that only men screw up in marriage. Even if it appears like the woman screwed up, it has to have been the man’s fault who drove her to it.

It’s a real psychological sickness IMO. There is no excuse for what this woman did. If there was, then she had no excuse to leave the children in jeopardy.

Men and women screw up, but until there is information to the contrary, the evidence so far proves this woman screwed up terribly.

Rumor had it when this first happened that she is addicted to prescription pain medicine. Why running away is apparently a better option than seeking help is not known.

There are different ways of looking at it. I think she had indicated before she ran away that she was a lousy role model for her kids. She may have felt the kids were better off without her, especially if her addiction became public knowledge or at least known in the congregation her husband led. I can see how she might feel she should take off before anyone found out about it. I don’t excuse it but I doubt she abandoned the kids to a worse situation than being on the run with a controlled substances abuser.
