Microsoft’s big win in China

Who remembers Red Flag Linux? Born during the dot-com boom and officially financed and adopted by the Chinese government, Red Flag Linux was supposed to be China’s answer for avoiding the double-team of Windows and Microsoft Office that dominates the rest of the world’s PCs. In some circles, the potential spread of Red Flag Linux in the world’s most populated nation was even hailed as a critical sign that Microsoft was not going to be able to spread its domination of the software market to the rest of the world.

However, Red Flag Linux has turned out to be little more than a key bargaining chip in a high stakes game of commerce between the Chinese government and the world’s largest software maker. Thanks to some major concessions on source code and a precipitous price drop, the Chinese government has now thoroughly embraced Windows and Office. And thanks to a major about-face in the way that it deals with piracy, Microsoft has also won over the Chinese people.

In April, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates took a victory lap in China, and Fortune magazine’s David Kirkpatrick went along for the ride, writing an account of the trip and an excellent synopsis of Microsoft’s rocky path to success in China in a piece called “How Microsoft conquered China - Or is it the other way around?”

^^^^^^^^^^unlike the Linux company Red Hat which gives the Chinese their code for free, and allows them to then rename and resell it as “Red Flag”. THAT’s communism^^^^^^^^^^^

No it’s not. Communism forces you to do something against your will, what you just described was free will. That’s arguably capitalism. It definately isn’t communism.

But here we have the communist government of china supporting and most likely advocating windows.

Interesting. I remember a poster once saying that because linux was advocated by communist governments that it = communism. Once again, windows is no different.

^^^^^^^^^^^^which you of course defend in your endless attacks on capitalists like Microsoft and Apple who try to sell their technology instead.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Nah, I don’t attack them. I merely point out that they are left wing companies. That’s all.

I’m comfortable with that truth, unlike you. Apple = liberal. Microsoft = liberal. The truth is what it is. At some point, you will have to just accept the truth. Here on Free Republic, I’ve seen all kinds of freepers make note of Apple’s/Jobs and Microsoft’s/Gates and/or whoever from these companies. These are not conservative companies. Neither is Sun. How much software do you think they’re going to put under the GPL, which happens to be your favorite left wing document?

Whatever. everyone knows your hero “the father of free software” Richard Stallman is a moonbat green party leftist, you trying to accuse US conpanies of being equally extreme is absurd. The “free software for the world” movement you support is green party whacko thinking at its finest, watching you attack US companies as being evil for simply trying to sell the tecnology instead exposes you as a card carrying member as well. It’s funny too, like watching Ralf Nader accuse others of being too liberal LOL, just the sort of nonsense we’d expect from him.

You continue to ignore everything that everybody says and keep right on with just creating and living in your own reality over there.

I can only defend my own words. I’m not going to defend yours and pretend that they’re my words. Sorry.

Yeah well my reality and the real reality match up pretty close. Those of you who puppet Stallman’s “free software for the world” vision and insisted it was going to catch on with many besides communists and those who want or need something for free were obviously wrong. Heck according to the article even the Chicomms are willing to pay something, for a better product. So you guys can go back to trying to explain how Uncle Dick really isn’t a green party moonbat, arguing that his new anti-patent license is better than the old one, etc. Meanwhile, companies like Apple and Microsoft will keep seeing record profits, whether Stallman’s kooks protest in the streets in their hazmat suits or not LOL.

No they don’t. You constantly see things in my posts, and other peoples’ posts, which simply aren’t there.
