I could do that with my grass. But not now since I skinned it.

Unless you scalped it to the ground and damaged the runners, it should grow out ok. Might take a while, and might require more frequent water than usual.
I’ve always heard—and it’s what works in our yard— that you should mow on the middle blade-height setting. Come fall, when you’re doing the last mow of the season, you raise it one notch so that the grass is a little taller over winter to protect its roots from freeze.
