Man run over by truck while lighting cigarette
Houston Chronicle ^ | 8/16/07 | KEVIN MORAN

Posted on 07/16/2007 10:13:49 AM PDT by trumandogz

A Pasadena man died after he accidentally walked into the side of a tanker trailer in the 9300 block of Lawndale Sunday, police said.

Mack Herbert Vance III, 36, was lighting a cigarette when he hit the side of the truck trailer as the rig made a left turn onto Central from Lawndale, HPD accident investigation Off. L.C. Morrison II said today. The incident occurred at about 9:15 p.m.

No charges will be filed against the truck's driver, who Morrison said was so upset at Vance's death that he wept and vomited at the scene.

Vance had been dropped off by a friend near his workplace, a friend told police.

The truck driver said Vance was walking in the intersection but the man was not in the truck's path, Morrison said. Vance had his head lowered as he was lighting a cigarette and made a sharp turn toward the truck as he did so, witnesses told police.

Vance was crushed under the truck's wheels, Morrison said. His head struck the cargo tank's side and his baseball-style cap ended up on the trailer, he said.

Vance leaves a wife, who is pregnant, Morrison said. The wife and Vance's father came to the scene. Their names were not released.

Somehow, his family or an eyewitness will find a way to sue Big Tobacco.

I'm very sorry for his wife and child, but if he was so in need of his nicotine fix (which was going to to contribute to an early death anyway) that he couldn't watch where he was going, he seems to qualify for a Darwin award...

The people who are to be pitied and receive sympathy are the wife and child, the parents, and the truck driver - not one who walked into the side of a moving big rig...

He just didn’t look as he was lighting his cigarette on the road. He should have been looking and aware of surroundings, but it isn’t the stupidest thing in the world.

oh8eleven’s comment could be because the Darwin award is for those so stupid that their genes should be pulled out of the human gene pool. Since he apparently has a child on the way, his genes could be passed on.

I was piloting a 44 foot trawler into Annapolis harbor last night. As I was about to make a turn to port to head toward the slip, I encountered two young guys (18-20 yr olds) in kayaks. They were pointed in a direction that would have had them right on my bow as I turned, but they weren’t moving. They were both looking down, and I had the feeling neither one knew I was there. I finally realized they were taking a smoke break (so much for healthy exercise in a kayak) but were having trouble lighting their cigarettes because of the breeze. I finally hit my horn, and that got their attention real fast. Up to then, though, they were just plain clueless.

True story...

I saw a guy walk into a spinning propeller once - because he was looking down - removing a cigarette from a pack.

Smoking ... it’ll getcha.

If they were is a kayak they were most likely getting stoned.

BTW-What do you fish for in your trawler up in MD?

Candidate for a Darwin award?

Why do people always say this on these threads!?

The article says he leaves behind a pregnant wife.

A person can only win the Darwin Award of there is no progeny.

I clicked on this thread to see if it was the truck or the cigarettte that was blamed for his death.

Hopefully the wife will marry someone better next time.

No, he has offspring on the way. His DNA has already been passed on therefore no Darwin award.
