RIVIERA BEACH — In September 2001, a very lucky ex-con named David Lee Edwards arrived in Palm Beach County with $27 million and a history of drug abuse.

The $27 million was his take, after taxes, from Kentucky's Powerball lottery. Edwards, 46, had been laid off shortly before he bought the winning ticket at Clark's Pump N Shop in Ashland, Ky., a blue-collar town on the Ohio River where he grew up.

He became a convict in the early 1980s after a gas station hold-up, followed by parole violations and arrests for drug possession. He was in and out of prison, and finally out for good in 1997

That’s because the sensible people don’t waste their money on lotteries.

I’m ashamed to say he’s a local boy, but it is what it is. The local gendarmes that I spoke with following this drug dealer (and that’s what he was/is) winning gave an over/under of 3 years till he was broke. So, he’s got that going for him, which is good.

My best friend owns the store where the ticket was bought and I was playing golf with him when the lottery agency called to inform him his store had sold the winning ticket. I bought my Powerball ticket for that drawing at the same store, needless to say I put the golf cart into 4 wheel drive heading to my vehicle to check my numbers!

This is a picture of him with his "bride." Something doesn't add up. With his cars totaling around $750K, and a house for $1.2 million, that left around $25 million. Interest on that money would have been huge. IF those were his only big purchases, that must have been one heck of a party! LOL

Win a lottery....change nothing in your life...and gradually make changes...and pray a lot...all along the way....

“IF those were his only big purchases, that must have been one heck of a party! LOL” He also invested in around 25 “business opportunities” for between $100K and $1mm each, of which one was a LIMOUSINE service in Ashland, Kentucky! It’s my hometown, and the last thing that crosses my mind when making $$ here is limos. His trips out to Ceasars didn’t help. Did they mention the Bentley in the article? BTW: he didn’t have a license (DUI’s)the first couple years after winning, so had “drivers”.

The various brokers did a ## on him also, “grinding” his accounts for the commissions. Combine all this with the drugs and hangers on, and voila..........broke.
