PROVO - The beating death of 20-month-old Jordan Putnam included "severe physical abuse indicative of physical torture," prosecutors said Monday as part of their request to keep the toddler's father in jail without bail.
Prosecutors also argued that a no-bail hold on Jason Mike Putnam would ensure the safety of the defendant, who has attempted suicide in the past.
Fourth District Judge Steven Hansen granted the state's request and revoked Putnam's bail of $250,000, a sum the American Fork man had not been able to raise.
Putnam, 23, is charged with aggravated murder, which carries the possibility of execution, for the June 12 death of his young son.
He is the first defendant to be charged with a newly enacted addition to Utah's homicide statute that provides the possibility of the death penalty for killing a child under age 14.
Also new this year is the requirement that prosecutors must file their intent to seek the death penalty within 60 days after a defendant is arraigned following a preliminary hearing.

That guy is a perfect SOB!
Why waste a bullet, beat him to death, maybe base ball bats...they can be cleaned up.
The main problem with vengeance and retribution like this is not so much what it does to the guilty criminal, but what it does to change the heart of the vengeful.
It's better in the long run to let the Almighty render the proper, eternal punishment for brutal murderers and other serious criminals, IMO. We just need to send them to Him as soon as we're sure.
No, I did not make my self clear. The government who would off the guy should use base ball bats, so much cheaper for the taxpayers.
“It’s better in the long run to let the Almighty render the proper, eternal punishment for brutal murderers and other serious criminals”
You sound like my Wife. I don’t want to have to rely on my faith to see justice done.
Agreed.
It doesn't take faith to learn just how far off in left field mortal man's idea of "justice" can get, only a study of history.
It used to be "justice" for a n###er to be strung up for looking at a white woman.
It used to be "justice" for an alleged "witch" to be burned to death slowly, or disemboweled and fed her own entrails.
Moral man's "justice" frequently gets very screwed up. One of the basic components of my faith is that God is a God of justice, and that He knows all.
Only one who knows all can truly dispense justice.
Shooting that subhuman piece of garbage would be too merciful.
Another innocent child beaten and murdered.
Beat him senseless with a baseball bat, then decide that he is in a persistent vegative state. Remove all feeding tubes, and refuse to keep this scumbag hydrated...hey it’s euphoric dontcha know. /s
Those are extreme examples. God has already declared the death penalty for murder, there’s no concern about man’s interpretation of justice. The government has the God given authority to carry it out.
Gen 9:6 "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man.
What are you suggesting here?
This POS, who judged his son too weak, chose to beat manhood into his FOUR year old son. You compare our justice system to this depraved act and the ones you mentioned?
It's worse than that... his son was a 20-month-old.
Against very angry people who are big enough to fight back.
"felt his son should be tough like a man . . . and not cry." I wonder if this murderer is crying in his cell?
Read the messages that led up to that reply. It will be clearer to you.
