(7/07/07 - KATY, TX) - Writing "I love Alex" on a gymnasium wall dealt a suburban Houston sixth-grader four months at an alternative campus for an infraction school officials lump in the same severity as making terroristic threats.
Written with a baby blue marker, the graffiti by Shelby Sendelbach, 12, was considered by the Katy Independent School District as a Level 4 infraction -- also the same level for drug possession and assault.
Only murder, gun possession, sexual assault and arson are considered more severe by the district.

The good news is that the parents will now strongly consider private/parochial education as an alternative to the insanity of the public school system. Please see my post at #40

I assume they took 27 8-by-10 color glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence against her. Hopefully the Judge will fine her 50 dollars and tell her to clean up the mess. Only if she didn't go off the side of the mountain on her motorsicle and land on a cop car.
But what about the pickle?

She didn’t get “suspended” she got sent to reform school. That said this was prolly an overreaction based in zero tolerance policies. Graffiti = You might be a gangster = Reform school.

As a public school employee for a Northern California School District I agree that the zero tolerence BS as exemplified in this case is outrageous. What happened to letting the punishment fit the crime/offense? The persons responsible for this travesty should be removed from their positions and lose all there benefits.

Schools love this stuff. They can brand her “at risk” and get a bigger chunk of change from the state.
The proper response is to have her clean up her mess, and clean the entire gym with a toothbrush.
problem solved, no taxpayer money wasted.

Maybe the 'A' and the 'L' looked a whole lot like an 'S'???You just brought up an uncomfortable high school memory.
There was a kid that I had to sit next to in a couple of my classes because at the time, we were seated alphabetically throughout the school. He was the swishiest guy I had ever met, and he wasn't shy about it either. He would frequently wear a 1" diameter button that said "I Love Sex." It gets worse -- on his folders, where some kids would draw Hello Kitty or the logo of their favorite band, he would sketch -- wait for it -- phalluses.

Not a bad idea. I like it. Fits the crime.

Ridiculous overreaction. Make her clean the wall. Simple.

"This is what happens in this PC litigious society. Kids get expelled for really minor things that would never had raised an eyebrow 20 years ago."Correct. Conversely, kids don't get kicked out for stuff that would have gotten them expelled 20 years ago.
And for the same reason...

But the real question is left unanswered, does Alex love Shelby??
To: Chasaway
Funny thing is Seung-Hui Cho never got expelled for stalkling girls, taking upskirt photos with his cameraphone, and setting fire in his dorm room. Those are all real crimes and can get you kicked out and even jailed. I remember in college days, some dude lit a bag of s*** on fire on my floor and he was kicked out for from the dorm. Later on, he set fire to another dorm and died.
