Fascinating to watch, but also an opportunity to observe since we won’t be getting iPhones here: it won’t be supported in most of the State nor the rest of the Fourth World.

For the iPhone to work there must be an infrastructure, and appropriate to the device. Alaska in general, and the rest of the Fourth World continues to lack that in spite of World Bank attempts at nation building in the Fourth World and because of successful Congressional efforts to retard development in Alaska. Alaska is still pretty much as it was when purchased from Russia at the end of the Civil War, except it now has an ‘Off Limits to Developers’ sign at the entrance.

The JerkEver since seeing The Jerk back in '79, I always laugh when the new phone books come out. Not many lines in a movie have that staying power.

Oddly, I found atleast part of AK to have better reception than my (at the time) urban area. A cell phone has been my only phone since 1998 and I had bad reception in many parts of the Boston area for many years. While on the kenai peninsula in 2004 I had great reception everywhere I went.

Do they have iPhone support on the Kenai? Stay inside the railbelt and you’re probably okay. I am just north of the railbelt and have to stand in the yard to get cell reception.

Don’t know, this was just one anecdotal experience. I did get full digital voice signal (CDMA? via AT&T). Does the iPhone need something special? GSM? 3G? HSDPA?

Can’t say. If I notice somebody carrying one of these ludicrously expensive devices I will see if he is actually using it or if we have a cargo cult going here.
