Yah, but heck, Gondram, the benefit of acetone is the thinning of gasoline and the relative increase in internal vaporisation. ''Heat content'' isn't the reason one uses it. Using small amounts (about 3.5 oz/15 gallons) will indeed help the mpg somewhat. Been using it for years, and the comparisons are pretty well inarguable.

Figure acetone costs about $1.00/4 oz, and much cheaper if one buys a gallon or two (something like $0.26/lb in bulk). Even a 4-oz. bottle will be cost-effective on any gain of 2-3 net mpg, given motor gasoline @ $3.00.

One trick: has to be pure. Contaminants, as from waste acetone, must be filtered out or stripped or else the engine can run VERY rough.

So is the acetone sold at Home Depot or wherever pure enough for use in a car?
