World’s Oldest Car Headed For Auction
The Winding Road ^ | June 28th, 2007 | unknown

Posted on 06/28/2007 3:01:48 PM PDT by Daffynition

The world’s oldest running car is set to cross the auction block at Pebble Beach in August.

The catchy-sounding De Dion-Bouton et Trapardoux was built in France in 1884, and amazingly, it’s a three owner car. Among its many credentials, “La Marquise” is a steam-powered four-wheeled car that is believed to have won the first automobile race.

Top speed on the car is a startlingly high 38 miles-per-hour, which must feel decidedly exciting given its primitive construction and solid rubber tires. To reach that heady speed, drivers need to first stoke the car with coal, wood, paper, or other readily combustible materials, and then wait for around a half-hour to generate enough steam for the car to get rolling.

The De Dion-Bouton et Trapardoux is expected to hammer for between $1.5 and $2 million.

“A rumble seat doeth not a Nash flip-back front seat or a Frazer Traveler seat maketh.”

I enjoy these antique car topics but this old coot needs some restoration himself. God willing, tomorrow will be a new day for discussion. Good night all.

Yes, knowing the news instantly has changed everything. Just imagine the Flapper days - when those old cars were around.

It was a wild time I think but no instant news then.

I’m not familiar with the Frazer Traveler but a guy in highschool had one of those Nash flip-back seat cars and girls were wary of him and it, lol.

Yes, I recall the rounded shape of it. It was an unbecoming color of brown too! Didn’t know about the Porsche.

Very pretty car.

But not the world’s oldest, lol.

You will have to remember about this in August and see what they get for that car at auction!

I know a guy who restored a '27 Dodge Bros. pickup several years ago. He owns the Gold King Mine in Jerome, Az., and if you've ever go there, you'll see dozens of vehicles (and other neat stuff) and darn near every one of 'em runs! Right now he has what is supposedly the world's oldest running Studebaker...a 1901 electric. He is always bringing home new/old stuff. If I think about it, next time I see him, I'll ask him what he can round up for you.

I have a strange feeling you’ve met the guy I refer to in post #110.

Nice! There is something special about taking a lost machine and bringing it back to life ... the only problem is living long enough to see all your dreams to completion.

If your friend at Jerome is a member of the Dodge Brothers Club, I may eventually meet him. I have gotten some help locating parts for my car through various members. The Club's bi-monthly news bulletin is also helpful.

Beautiful cars, devolve!
I love the colored wheels.

But, they don’t go very fast. ;o)
