I get bloated just typing those titles.

Ungh! TMI you walrus...

Here is a link to AFI's top 100 movies

So what's everyone think? I suspect that years of sub standard education, the dumbing down of society and the cultural depravity spread by Hollywood has left us with very few writers who can produce a coherent, compelling story, therefore, less interesting movies.

Sure, you have the occasional hit, but aside from the series of frenzied murder sprees in celluloid which enthusiastically embrace the legacy of the bloody Roman arenas you've really got only a few movies here and there which really make you want to go see them.

Today's movies either cover too much adult subject ammter or are simply mindless. Too many examples to consider IMHO.

I really do have a problem with the bloody murder movies. It worries me that the mass, graphics slaughter of men and women can serve as a form of entertainment. I know some people like it and consider it a "thrill" movie, but I wish people would reconsider what a "thrill" should be. Try a roller-coaster or something. ; )

"Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (No. 50), "Saving Private Ryan" (No. 71), "Titanic" (No. 83) and "The Sixth Sense" (No. 89).

I loved The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Saving Private Ryan was ok, Band of Brothers was way better though. The Sixth Sense was overrated.
Finally I come to Titanic. This was the most crappiest crapfest of a movie I've ever force myself to sit through. Kate Winslets magnificent rack couldn't save this fecesfest of a movie. I couldn't wait for the damn thing to sink so all the main characters would die. The best scene besides the ship sinking was that pretty boy sinking (whatever his name is). I cheered at that one. Really, this movie sucked in ways yet unimagined. So, to summarize, I didn't like Titanic. :-)

IMHO Cinderaella Man is one of the best movies ever. It should easily have won Best Picture for 2005. Instead Hollywood nominated a bunch of gay movies and and the winner, Crash, movies nobody saw or will remember.

Someone figured out how to make snuff films and call them art.

the last 10 years

Patch Adams, 1998. Worst movie ever made. A hundred good ones can't pay the debt owed to society. Everyone associated with it should be papilloned to French Guiana.

If Titanic made the list, it must have been. I thought Sixth Sense was pretty good, the one critical scene was well done, and made the rest of the movie work.

I thought there were many great movies during the 90’s. I would have put Primal Fear up there instead of boring Sixth Sense. I did not care for the movie but the Passion should be up there. Titanic was a good pick (#1 film of all times in America and the World). Too many even to think of.

Agree. Add to that the proliferation of television through jillions of channels, the demand for scripts is so great that mediocre ones are snapped up.

Interestingly enough, I have a brother-in-law who worked for two of the major studios who advised me 20 years ago (when this proliferation was in its early stages) that I should write scripts, for that very reason. If I had taken his advice, I could probably be rich now, and never have had to produce one that even rates in the top 1,000.

I also thought Open Range was a dandy classic western. Enough to make me forgive Kevin Costner for Waterworld and The Postman.

I would also have toinclude Rounders in my own top 100 list.

"Titanic" is a masterpiece. It elevated movie-making to an entirely new level with its amazing realism and captivating story-telling.

It received the most "votes" of any movie in history - the kind of "votes" that count. It brought in more money in ticket sales and DVD's than any movie in history. A lot of people "voted" more than once. They kept spending their money to return to the theater to see the movie over and over again.

People can debate the quality of movies until the cows come home but there is no denying the popularity of something millions embrace by laying down their hard-earned money in piles never counted before in history.

I'm sure James Cameron cries when he reads someone trashing his fantastic movie....all the way to the bank.

To answer the question: Yes, of course it was that bad. I haven’t watched all of a single one of them. I think the last time I went to a theater was either for Jurassic Park or Back to the Future. Jurassic Park sucked. Back to the Future was great.

Oh, you say those weren’t in the past decade? Silly me.

How anyone can sit through those “Lord of the Rings” movies with all that stupid pig squealing and cries of “FRODO!!!!!” every 10 seconds is beyond me.

Just reading the intellectual level of the responses so far has been revealing! "That movie sucked..."

Hollywood has focused on making money by pitching formula movies to exactly that education level. The quality's down because the money-paying audience is looking for cheap thrills, not elevation.

Movies as an art form are wonderful but the average Joe out there wouldn't be able to sit still through a really good movie. All you have to do is read the comments so far and you get the idea..

Woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep at 3AM, so found myself at FR and just downloaded the AFI list.

Not surprisingly... a few of the choices tickle my fancy or leave me scratching my head...

Raging Bull at #4? I found it to be one of my least favorite of Scorsese’s stable. I think he is overrated as a director and championed way too by the Hollywood elites, but I did really enjoy his take on Howard Hughes in The Aviator. The musical score and staging was par excellent! His Goodfellows and The Departed are two keepers even if I thought the ending of Departed was forced and trite.

Vertigo at #9? Of all of Hitchcock’s thrillers, this is one of the poorest IMHO. To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest, Rear Window, Strangers on a Train, Dial M for Murder, Notorious, Psycho... Even The Trouble with Harry are better films than Vertigo.

City Light at #11 (up 65 spots from 1997) and The General (New on the list) at #18 leave me wondering why these silent films should make such a jump up in their ranking when the current crop of young film-goers (Who BTW cannot read, write or spell) I hear whining all the time that ‘old’ flick are “...not even in color!”

The Searchers at #12 up from 96 ten years ago. This is a welcome rise as it is one of my favorite John Ford works and one of the best pieces of acting in John Wayne's career eclipsed only by his work in The Shootist which did not even make the list.

Speaking of under rated Westerns, was happy to see Shane rise 24 spots to 69, but it deserved to be much higher.

A Clockwork Orange at #70 better than Saving Private Ryan newly arrived at #71? Who’s six day drunk got this approved... Clockwork would not be on my list of the 10,000 best films and Saving deserves to be higher than 71.

Was glad to see newcomers Cabaret make the list at #63, The Last Picture Show at #95 and Bladerunner at #97.

Well, the old Sandman has come back and I shall heed his advice and stretch out shortly for an early morning nap.

Gadzooks, these garage sales really take it our of an old fud like me!

the last 10 years have produced only four great ones: "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (No. 50), "Saving Private Ryan" (No. 71), "Titanic" (No. 83) and "The Sixth Sense" (No. 89).

What about the masterpiece "Office Space"? These idiots are way too focused on "serious" films.

Back in the early 70’s when I was a Libertarian, a conservative smoking pot, I thought “Terror of Tiny Town” was a 30’s classic.

Here’s a movie you might like....it has subtitles and it starts a bit slow...but by the end you will thoroughly enjoy it! I did....very different in a way but the story is universal.
