Was the Last Decade of Movies THAT Bad?

Is this all a decade of movies is worth?

According to the American Film Institute's new list of the 100 greatest films, the last 10 years have produced only four great ones: "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (No. 50), "Saving Private Ryan" (No. 71), "Titanic" (No. 83) and "The Sixth Sense" (No. 89).

I get bloated just typing those titles. Granted, the last 10 years have been a historically weak period for films. They can't touch Hollywood's golden era of the '40s, or the heralded '70s, when maverick directors roamed the studios.

This DR.T and the Women is hands down the WORST MOVIE EVER MADE!

OMG, you have triggered a horrible repressed memory. You'll be hearing from my lawyer!

The missus wanted to see this movie, then agreed it was one of the worst ever!

What about the masterpiece "Office Space"? These idiots are way too focused on "serious" films.

No. The so-called “Issac Asimov’s Nightfall” was the worst movie ever made.

Not only is it a stinker in its own right, it is also the worst adaptation of the written word to the silver screen ever made.

Asimov should rise out of the grave and sue for defamation of character.

Back in the early 70’s when I was a Libertarian, a conservative smoking pot, I thought “Terror of Tiny Town” was a 30’s classic.

My favorite Hitchcock was “North by Northwest, possibly overlooked due to snobbish dismissal of cable-cast movies.

Long as we are going for classics, try “Twelve Angry Men”. No way in hell actors of that stature could be put in less than a major-budget film today, and this is a basically one-set film, not a lot of kung-fu or car chases.

Realistically, I see the over-exposure, but Godfather and Godfather II,(one of the few sequals better than the original) have to rank near the top. OK, cotton-candy for the mind, BUT... I won state awards as Peter in Albee’s “Zoo Story” as an amateur, but after a sixty hour week, I am not opposed to well done eye-candy. In that line, I agree “The Shootist” was Wayne’s best, and the original cellulose copies of “Clockwork Orange” could self-ignite with no great loss to Western Civilization.

One addition I would make: I do not speak functional German, but “Das Boot” in the subtitled was the first foreign film I saw where midway through I quit bothering with the reading and got into total suspension of disbelief.

Remember Sturgeon’s Law: 90% of everything is crap.

Null and void, good point, Sturgeon’s Law was originated with Sci-Fi. Only reason I would disagree with “Nightfall” is the broader circulation of Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers”, a formarly rare example of taking a novel back to comic books.

The Prestige is an excellent movie. I think one could rank it as "great". There have been many "very good" movies in the last 20 years, but indeed few greats that will stand up over time. Deja Vu (Denzel Washington) is very very good. His Fallen is even better, a very creepy drama/suspense, certainly as good as The Sixth Sense. Stranger Than Fiction was much better than expected. I was quite surprised by that one.

Here’s a movie you might like....it has subtitles and it starts a bit slow...but by the end you will thoroughly enjoy it! I did....very different in a way but the story is universal.

Yeah—that bad and worse!
Not just the flix eithere—just as there are no more MacArthurs, Pattons, LeMays, Pullers and Carlsons, the same sad situation prevails in all areas of life today. Blame it on all the drugs, etc. the ancestors of some of us thrived on in the ‘60s, but, actually, even that was just a symptom of the real problem.

“Titanic” was a good story, but NOT realistic. A guy from steerage hooking up with a woman in first class. Never happen.
