A Roswell woman on her daily walk Friday morning was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull, which tore into her head, police said.
The woman, who was saved by neighbors responding to her screams, was in surgery Friday morning at North Fulton Regional Hospital for severe but non-life threatening injuries, said Roswell Police Lt. James McGee.
Neighbors tried to stop the attack by beating the dog with sticks and shovels, but "they didn't faze him," said Charles Tedford, president of the homeowners association in the Lake Forest subdivision, where the attack occurred.
The dog finally stopped and turned on a neighbor who had been hitting it with a shovel, biting him in the arm, McGee said.
The dog then turned to attack another neighbor who was approaching with a .45-caliber pistol. He killed the dog with one shot to the head, McGee said.
The female victim was not carrying identification and neighbors did not know her name. Her home in the 900 block of Lake Haven Court, is owned by Quoc Khoan Giang, and the home phone is listed under the name of W.A. Trinh, according to records.

He backed away, then he muscled his way out of the collar and attacked her.”
1) The dog slipped his collar which tells me that the dog was on a flat collar and the collar was not tight enough.
Twelve-year-old Payton Newell was walking the dog when Trinh came up and tried to pet it, Payton said He started growling and I said, ‘Don’t pet him,
2 The dog is obviously leash aggressive, the owner knew it.
“Bailey yanked the 60-pound male, named Achilles...”
So what we have here is a 100 lb, 12 year old boy walking a 60 pound leash aggressive dog on a flat collar. Any responsible dog owner should have put this dog of this size and temperament on a prong collar, or at least a choke collar. Secondly a responsible owner would not allow a child to handle this dog in public. These people knew the dog had dangerous tendencies and did nothing to protect their neighbors from it.
By the way, When they say the dog backed away, They don’t mean it baked away from Trihn. I suspect they mean the dog backed away from Newell. The boy was probably trying to pull the dog away from Trihn. The dog instinctively resisted by pulling backwards and slipped his collar.
Granted, Pitt bulls arent inherently lethal. But in the hands of the typical owner, theyre a land mine waiting to be stepped on. Its like giving a Ferrari to a 16 year old boy. He may be able to drive it around the block without an accident. Maybe the kid is mature enough to handle the responsibility, but the odds arent very good, and the other drivers on the road would be a lot safer if the kid had a Yarris.
Pit bull owners flame away
Every day I deal with a jackass neighbor and his pit bull and I am damned sick of it.
The owner being an idiot is beside the point however. I can't do much about that. The fact remains that I and my other neighbors have a lethal dog to deal with and some day it will be the dog or me or perhaps a neighborhood child.
These dogs should be required to be in a pen or other secure area. To have a dog of a type that if it should get loose, can cause injury or death to innocent bystanders in the neighborhood is frankly unacceptable.
Start requiring these people who want these dogs to carry 5 million dollar liability policies and this nonsense will stop because they won’t be willing to pay for that insurance and they will look for another breed. To even be out walking a dog like this that can aggressively attack the public is the height of irresponsibility. I say this as a dog owner for all of my adult life.
Gun bad, dog good?
i never said the gun was bad i said WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPEND IF HE HAD MISSED THE DOG AND HIT SOME ONE ...????????
If we're going to have keyword abuse, could the spelling at least be correct?
Ping!
A citizen with a .45 saves the day.
BUMP
Good. I'll bet he'd never hurt a flea, either. Dog of peace
What a load of crap. Very friendly but doesn't like to be touched. She's in denial.
Sure he's the gentlest dog in the world, and he just proved it.
Welcome to FR.
Anti-gun, pro-viscous animal, blame the victims.
Your reasoning stinks. It is good the man had a gun. If he had missed and hit someone, there’d still be a chance they’d still be less seriously injured that what that dog was doing to people.
Read the article. The lady didn’t speak English. People were beating the dog with sticks and shovels and it didn’t stop him. It was a killing machine on high. Pit bulls should be banned and shot.
This lady trusted her animal, too.
Now there's an oxymoron if I ever heard one.
I hope that he then twirled the gun on his finger, blew the smoke off the barrel, and slammed it into the holster! Good shootin' Marc.
“no its not a good thing the man had a gun”
So, you would have preferred the elderly lady had been killed rather than face the possibility of a poor shot? There’s no point in arguing what would have happened because it didn’t; other than you’re arguing that such nice doggies don’t deserve to be killed even when they’re mangling a human being.
We get the idea that you love your pitbulls, but the dog was trying to kill an elderly woman. As for not petting the dog, that information wasn’t in the original article. Nevertheless, while the woman was warned, she also did not understand English and it doesn’t justify letting a boy take out a dog he was unable to handle.
NOTE TO SELF, do not bring a dog to a gun fight.
No flames..I think your analysis in this post and the one above is pretty solid.
A child should never be given the responsiblity to control
a large or strong dog, of any breed/type, in public.
There is a leash/control law in my state, and further, there is NO legal defense if your dog injures someone, anywhere (private property or not). Taking this a tad further, you are allowed to use lethal force to protect yourself or others if you are attacked by a dog in a publicly accessible place, and this does not mean 'it drew blood.'
Put this all together, and you have, for the most part, polite dog owners. Our K9 officers are quite selective about when to release their dogs here, because the state will pay damages. You just put common sense to work, and if it involves the safety of the officer/s or the public, turn the dog loose, and pay the damages.
My partner is a 160 pound bull rottie. I don't let my kids walk him. I kinda like him. He covers my six, I cover his.
If a dog attacks me, I'll put a few .40's through it.
Questions? Buehler?
