June 20, 2007, 12:30PM Angry crowd kills man riding in car that struck child

By LIZ AUSTIN PETERSON Associated Press

AUSTIN — A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said today.

The man who was killed Tuesday night had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said. The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40, of Austin. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The beating began after the car struck the child as it entered an apartment complex's parking lot, said Commander Harold Piatt, who leads the department's homicide division.

The driver got out of the car to check on the 3- or 4-year-old girl and was confronted by several people, Piatt said. When they began to assault him, Morales got out of the car to help and was attacked as well.

The driver got away and is cooperating with investigators, police said. Piatt did not know how many witnesses had been identified but said anywhere from two to 20 people may have participated in the attack.

When police arrived, Morales was lying in the parking lot. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A preliminary autopsy listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death, and Piatt said no guns or knives were used.

Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a city-sponsored Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred, though Piatt said he did not know whether anyone involved had attended. The daylong party featured a parade, a motorcycle show, music, food and events for children.

Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.

Can you imagine the national and media outrage if this had been a black victim that had bumped a child in a white “Southern Heritage” day picnic... and had been beaten to death for their offense?

This would be bigger than Duke Lacrosse, Macacca, and Katrina all rolled into one.

This whole scene is completely ridiculous. There is definitely an overlaying racial tone to this story. The moment I read this article I was infuriated by such barbaric behavior. Let me pose this question; Would there be a larger uproar in the community had the driver been the same race of the community being celebrated? Why among hundreds is there a lack of information on the actual beating?

I’m convinced that had this person been a different race, the attention would be much greater!

IDIOT! These are the same animals that have done most of the rioting and looting in this country since the 1940s.

The black underclass (and I DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT mean most black Americans) is the most alienated racial/ethnic group in the USA, and one that comprises 60% of our prison population.

Where did you get the idea that these were illegals? Oh, I'm sorry, you are another low IQ Calipornian. ;-)

It always amazes me that ethnic groups just can’t get along with each other. Irish-English; Norwegians-Swedes; Blacks-Jews; Blacks-Hispanics; Black blacks-lighter colored blacks...cheez.

Interesting. The AP story somehow fails to indicate anywhere in the story a motive for the deadly attack. Could it be a racially motivated one? Perhaps a hate crime? No, not to the AP because it most likely wasn’t perpetrated by a white person against a minority or a gay. Interesting, isn’t it?

Thanks, Clemenza, for calling me an idiot.

Way to observe the posting guidelines.

My point is simple: It really doesn't matter what ethnicity the perps here have.

I can tell you from experience that this sort of behavior after an accident is indicative of Third World behavior: from Central America, Africa, Middle East, whatever.

Admitting millions upon millions of illegals (from all over the world, not just Latin America) will make this sort of thing routine. That is the point of my post. Have a nice day.

For what it is worth, neither I nor my ancestors did any sort of importing of any people for the purpose of forced labor.

Nor did any of my ancestors abuse people of any minority.

So unlike many posters (I am not accusing you) I have no overriding anglo self-hate and guilt regarding this.

If you see the vitriol that has been directed my way, it makes you think that this is a powerful force in the minds of many.

I beg to differ.

I have been on missions in a central American country on many occasions.

A colleague, a health care worker from the United States, who worked for my organization in a different city but the same country, last year, had the misfortune of driving a car in a city of this country, when a motor scooter carrying two children cut in front of him. The scooter driver was driving between lanes of traffic in a totally reckless way (by the way people are starting to do this in Los Angeles now... I saw a lot of this last week in Los Angeles on the freeways).

The consensus of witnesses was that he was not at fault for hitting and killing them; that it was the carelessness of the kids on the scooter that got them killed.

Sadly, the children's family members (and a mob) surrounded my colleague, the car driver, and killed him on the spot.

This is the point that I was making with my first post: That this sort of lawlessness is common in many Third World countries.

And, by importing and granting amnesty to tens of millions of people from such countries into ours, we can expect to see this sort of catastrophe become commonplace in the US.

To me it makes no difference regarding the ethnicity of the perps in any given incident: The lawlessness and primitive behavior is Third World, regardless of the ultimate background of the perps.

Have a nice day.

Terribly sorry, kitkat, for "hijacking" the thread, at least according to your narrow constraint of the topic.

Still I think my comments were on point.

Specifically, that this sort of spontaneous vigilatism is actually pretty common in most Third World countries, regardless of the ethnicity of the perps.

By allowing utterly unrestricted immigration of tens of millions of people, from countries where this sort of thing happens, it stands to reason that we are going to see a lot more of this sort of barbarism.

Not just depressed wages among gardeners, hotel workers, etc., but, this kind of anarchy. That was my point.

The ethnicity of the perps is immaterial; the 'Third World' anarchy and mob rule is the important theme here.

Have a nice day.

The place where this happened is actually the parking lot of the Austin Community College (900 Thompson St) and the apartment complex is an Austin Housing program with Section 8 housing - Booker T. Washington Terrace on the 900 block of Thompson.

You write well, so if you didn’t want to be called a “thread jacker,” you should have made your reason clear in the first place instead of making me seem overly sensitive. Immigration thread jackers have become an extreme nuisance on FR.

I appreciate your ad hominem attack and of course your concern about me sounding (sic) inane.

But Bush is the first president who wholesale, for tens of millions of immigrants, wants to grant them amnesty, even after the events of 9/11 and all the minor terrorist incidents perpetrated since by illegal aliens.

This, in my mind, makes him twenty times more culpable and foolish than was Reagan, who with his amnesty dealt with a far smaller number of illegals, and who had no experience with events such as 9/11. Likewise for any other president.

Don't kid yourself... the current POTUS is the most clueless, reckless, and culpable of any administration, by far.

But have a nice day, thanks for your concerns about my intelligence.

The article doesn't really mention the ethnicity of the group, although one can surmise it.

As you know, the press routinely disguises or omits such information in articles about this type of event.

That is one of the commonest observations on this forum, if I am not mistaken.

My point has nothing to do with ethnicity... it has to do with lawlessness and the real risk of it increasing in the United States if we allow amnesty for those of many cultures (I did not limit it to Latin American ones... read the thread), where the rule of law is not observed.

Have a nice day.

You write well.

Even after many years on FR, I sometimes make mistakes in attacking the person rather than the subject matter if I have misread their statement.

A cordial approach will win an argument every time.

Keeps smiling,

Philip.
