AT&T quietly offers $10 DSL plan

Excerpt -

NEW YORK - Without any sort of fanfare, AT&T Inc. has started offering a broadband Internet service for $10 a month, half the price of its cheapest advertised plan.

The DSL, or digital subscriber line, plan introduced Saturday is part of the concessions made by AT&T to the Federal Communications Commission to get its $86 billion acquisition of BellSouth Corp. approved last December.

The $10 offer is available to customers in the 22-state AT&T service region, which includes former BellSouth areas, who have never had AT&T or BellSouth broadband, spokesman Michael Coe confirmed Monday. Local phone service and a one-year contract are required. The modem is free.

Ah, they knew this was coming. No wonder they have been burning up my phone lines wanting me to sign up for their other offerings.

The service provides download speeds of up to 768 kilobits per second and upload speeds of up to 128 kbps, matching AT&T's $19.95 plan.

That is the kicker. I wonder if that is capped or you can tweak to get more out of it. I suspect cap in which case I decline. They are starting to offer 6M down everywhere here.

MSM not ready for prime-time: “The DSL, or digital subscriber line, plan introduced ...”

That should be “direct subscriber line.” Everything is “digital.” Why can’t the MSM and wire services get even the basics right?

I'd never heard of that.

Sychronous and Asynchronous DSL

It's Symmetric and Asymmetric, actually.

I was pointing out that a Symmetric / Asymmetric 'Direct Subscriber Line' makes no sense.
Does a customer with a 'Asymmetric Direct Subscriber Line' have to talk slower?

It's Symmetric and Asymmetric, actually.

It's apparently used interchangeably with the same meanings...

ADSL - asynchronous or Asymmetric DSL - upstream speed is different from downstream (i.e. 608/128, 1500/384). Usually used for residential service, since residential customers don't need to upload much.

SDSL - synchronous or Symmetric DSL - upstream and downstream speeds are the same (i.e. 1.5M/1.5M). Usually used for business service.
