-- Red Hat Linux has received a new level of security certification, one that should make the software more appealing to some government agencies. Last week IBM Corp. was able to achieve EAL4 Augmented with ALC_FLR.3 certification for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, putting it on a par with Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Trusted Solaris operating system, said Dan Frye, vice president of open systems with IBM.

Bill must be twitching...
Linux is still far behind, FYI Sun Solaris and Microsoft Windows have already had this certification for many years. Sun’s webserver software destroys Apache on Linux for security too. I seriously doubt very many people will be switching, especially as support from Sun costs less than RH to begin with. If you want Red Hat go with Oracle you get the same exact code and half the support cost.
Excellent news. It would be interesting to see the specs for how the approved version was configured.

I would too. I wonder how 3rd party packages played into this.
It’s easy for something to be secure if it comes out of the box with everything turned off, or with everything removed/stripped.
If it were done with everything + the kitchen sink on, installed, and enabled then Bill probably was twitching. :-)
Besides, this isn’t the first RH OS to reach high security rating, SuSE has also done it.

*yawn* This isn’t the first time a linux OS achieved EAL.
Just to pick a nit--SUSE isn't a RH OS. :)
LOL!
I thought that the ‘has also’ cleared me of such things.
I guess not. :-P
ROFL, your posts are hilarious. FYI there are different levels of certification, you should do a lot more reading and a lot less posting, even shadow is embarrased for you LOL.
Apparently you’re embarrased for me now.
Were you aware of this?
Huh? Oh—you must mean that post I don’t have to look at. I have no idea what it says. :)
Oh yeah....... LOL
So, did you get the memo? You don’t seem very embarrassed.
You seem to be more astute than my accuser. :)
hahaha......... But that makes me wonder. When did GE gain the right to speak on your behalf, even with a false charge?
Never, but that doesn’t stop him. It’s one of the reasons I banned him from my screen.
Ditto, Id really like to see the specs..
Linux has had these capabilities for years its just never had the weight of someone like IBM to push for this recognition. The areas of advantage for Solaris continue to disappear, then again with open solaris, gpl java, and talks about OSS solaris the advantages of Linux over Solaris are disappearing.
Red Hat continues to, with too little community credit, put together the distro which moves linux higher and higher up the food chain.
