Who in the world would believe someone in an online dating service was an astronaut or a spy?

Joe Wilson?

LOL!

That said, it’s amazing what people will believe if they want to do so. I have a middle-aged female relative who “met” somebody on Craig’s LIst - of all places! - and believed every bizarre story he told her about his private jet, his estate in the Hamptons, the fact that he happened to have left his wallet in his jet every time they went out to dinner, and the fact that he needed somebody to give him a little backing in a deal he was doing...

Fortunately, she was rescued by the family accountant, who hired a PI and found that the guy was a marginally employed computer systems worker, lived with his wife and children in a nearby city, and had a track record of fleecing gullible women. And guess what? None of them had reported him to the authorities, and the PI found out only by reading posts on dating sites. They were all too embarrassed to be revealed as so desperate that they would go out with a sleazoid like that.
