Mary Winkler guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the March 2006 killing of her minister husband, Matthew. Judge gives her only 60 days in mental hospital............................
Sorry about that - seems the video has been removed.
What Mary did was very wrong. I still don’t like the in laws. IMHO in laws were very smug.
None of us knows what goes on behind closed doors.
That is precisely why I find it interesting that there are people who dislike Matthew Winkler's family without knowing anything about them other than the inferences made by Mary Winkler's attorneys.
You've said that you don't like the Winklers because of your perception of smugness about them (from viewing them on t.v.?), and that it caused you to be sympathetic toward Mary.
I've heard others say the Winklers must have this or that negative character traits because they are members of the church of Christ, or that they are coldhearted because their emotions weren't on public display.
The facts remain that the Winklers were called at a vacation cabin, in the middle of the night, on Dan Winkler's birthday. They were told that their son had been shot dead, and that his family was missing. Mary requested that they - not her own family - take custody of the children. Mary knew the Winklers. Her actions indicate, to me, that she held them in utmost regard.
Dan and Diane Winkler weren't the ones who made the situation. Their son was shot with a shotgun at point blank range as he lay sleeping in his bed. Mary is the one who did that horrible deed. They have done nothing but conduct themselves with dignity from the outset. Lesser people might have retaliated by trashing Mary, as she began trashing their son, and the father of their grandchildren, through her attorneys.
"None of us knows what goes on behind closed doors."
With absolutely no proof, and only the words of a cold-blooded killer (even if they were concocted by very "good" attorneys), some choose to believe Mary is a victim of spousal abuse. We will never know Matthew's version of what went on behind closed doors.
I know one thing that went on behind their closed doors - she killed her husband, the father of her children, the Winklers' son. She didn't call for help. She made several trips back and forth to the van, as he lay dying, before she fled the scene. Two of the items she took with her were the weapon (packed neatly in its case) used to kill Matthew, and the document that indicated her involvement in an illegal scheme for money.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, of course; but, I do find it interesting how people arrive at their opinions.
I am quite familiar with the case. The prosecutor and the judge live near by and go to our church.
It wasn’t meant as a contest, and I’m sorry you took it as confrontational. No offense intended. Have a good rest of the day. : )
I hope the crazy *itch never gets those children back.
It wasn’t enough for her to shoot him in the back. She wasn’t satisfied until she told ridiculous lies about their marital life in court that she could savor full revenge.
She should have gotten life in prison for a carefully premeditated coldblooded murder.
Oh, I get it. You are the local church gossip. Probably had the hots for the handsome Pastor Winkler.
No wonder so many people leave the church these days!
The ugly in you is coming out!
The ugly in you has been out all day! Time to call it home for dinner!!
It is time for you to mind your own business!
I still have a gut feeling that there was more to this case than has come out. Something just doesn’t add up: a beloved pastor, husband, father of three little girls, and porn on his computer? I know we don’t give people the death sentence for watching porn, but I am suspicious that something dark and painful was going on in the Winkler marriage. I wonder, too, if Mary, now speaks kindly of her husband to protect her children from some information about their father.
America.
Mens’ prison run by women.
It’s girls’ rules gang.
Men are expected to pay and shut up. If your wife wants to blast you with a shotgun, well, dammit, she can.
There was another wife who waited for her husband to come home one day and she shot him with a sniper rifle. That witch got away with it too.
I agree with you.
Did you see the 20/20 piece last night (July 6,2007)?

There is no proof other than Mary’s words (given to her by her lawyers?) that Matthew was an abuser.
But, ABC left out video proof of this side of Mary’s personality:

Sitting at a bar with a cigarette in her hand and a beer in front of her is quite a contrast from the meek little church mouse Mary and her lawyers presented on the stand.
It’s a shame ABC neglected to share proof of Mary’s “other side” with their audience.
