Similar to another pastors wife in St. Petersburg Florida who stabbed her husband in the femoral artery while he was sleeping. Claimed that he had “abused” her. Court bought it and she got a short term and then was released.
Happened about six or seven years ago, IIRC.

“The three years is the technical sentence, but its split between incarceration and probation. In theory its 210 days in custody, split 60 days in the mental hospital, 150 days incarcerated. The catch is that she has already done 150 days.
So its really just 60 days in the looney bin.”
She’s really lucky she didn’t anger Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald or go before Judge Reggie for sentencing - she might have actually been sentenced for murder!

An interesting note is that the prosecutor and the judge both live, and go to the same church in an other county.

Isn't Pepperdine a Nazarene school?
It was founded with $$$ from Pepperdine, the guy who founded
the Western Auto chain.
It is comes in for plenty of criticism for being too liberal
by the flyover-country Church of Christ members...but when I worked
a while in LA, everyone I met thought of it as a hotbed of
right-wing Christian fundamentalist militia members!
(I suspect a lot of that is jealous UCLA folks that look at
that Malibu campus whenever they drive up the Pacific Coast Highway...
and realize UCLA turned down a proposal to move UCLA to Malibu in
the post WWII era.)
I have a cousin that graduated from Pepperdine maybe 10 years ago;
she has assured me that Pepperdine U. is not an armed camp!
She said that one of her best courses there was taught by Ben Stein.
As for a Nazarene school...you might have been thinking of Point Loma
Nazarene. I think Dr. James Dobson (Focus On The Family) was
an undergrad there.

There was a time in this country when a husband could beat a wife unconscious and would only get a reprimand by the doctor at the hospital. I hope those days never return. Now, a wife can kill her husband in cold blood, and she gets the therapist’s couch and a bottle of pills. I think we have reversed the order and added cream on the top.

While our media followed the travails of privileged, spoiled brat, Paris Hilton, Mary Winkler got away with murder in Tennessee.

I think that is DISGUSTING. He didn’t even get to tell his side of the story, to stand up for himself, and the judge bought it? His parents are right — she killed him again by slandering him. And I hope the parents get custody. I mean, how sick, the children stay with the parent who killed the other parent??
Caught in the act/ that is different. Murder while sleeping .... How about using your words? How about just filing for a divorce? Boy, if that were MY son I’d be fried too.

I’ve met those people too. Sometimes they fool others around you, but for some reason you are on the receiving end and see it so clearly.
I had a client like that. Everyone would say, “Oh they are the nicest people, just such a great family.” I would say, “That woman is AWFUL.” It took a whole year but finally everyone else saw it clearly.
I think it stinks that she gets to just slander him as much as she wants, he has no recourse. Just disgusting.

There were quite a few cases of such acquittals as far back as the 1840s!

A little emotion (tears) would have gone a long way with me, if I had been on that jury. You should try crying when you're being tried for cold-blooded murder. Maybe you'll be lucky and get someone like yourself on the jury.
Better yet- cry in every situation possible... speeding tickets, paper-cuts, bad haircut. If a little emotion is good, then a lot must be even better!

It is reallyl amazing. I just wonder what the kids will really want to do, they may realize that the mother is a nut case. Running around kiting checks. This woman Winkler was no woman of virtue. She murdered her husband because he was upset about them being thousands of dollars in debt. She would be in jail for hot checks and spend more time if he hadn’t been killed. now she is out for everything.
She is bad, bad, bad.
And now she lives with a man. And wants her children to live with her.

I hope that by the time the custody issue needs to be resolved, the girls are old enough that the judge has to take their feelings into consideration.

This angers me so much. I think she should get the death penalty for killing her husband and than LYING about his action when he can defend himself. Paris gets 45 days for doing some stupid stuff (I know DUI is serious), Mary gets 60 days in a wacko hospital. Justice? I don’t think so.

Shep is making the comparison now between Winkler and Paris Hilton.
Good and I am not a Shep supporter, but this story comparison needs to get out to the public.

Her inlaws weren't "smug". They were very composed considering that Mary had allowed her lawyers to convince her to trash her husband's character and reputation to save her own hide from the sentence she deserved for shooting him in the back, leaving him to die alone on the bedroom floor, with an unplugged telephone at his feet, and without calling 911 to help him (as she had lied to her children that she had done).
Her husband's (the Winkler's son's) last word to her was "Why?". If he had done the things she accused him of doing, there wouldn't have been a reason to waste the breath to ask why, imo.
I pray for the children to be able to overcome the damage their mother has done to their lives.
