Central Fla. City Won't Fly Flag On Memorial Day Because Of Finances

DELAND, Fla. -- The American flag will not be flying over Volusia County courthouses on Memorial Day.

County leaders said they have a long-standing policy of not flying the flag on weekend holidays when everyone is off work.

The decision has angered some area residents, but a county spokeswoman said the decision is about finances not being unpatriotic.

The spokeswoman said the county doesn't have enough money to pay someone to come out on holiday weekends to raise and lower the flags.

deland is another of those beautiful little cities that's been taken over by freaks.

It's not all that far from Gainesville, another beautiful town taken over by aliens, where there was a move afoot a few years ago to fly the UN flag at the university.

I don't think it pays to wonder. I think it pays to assert your responsibilities as a citizen and get someone the hell out of bed to go fly the flag.

Of all the lame excuses - “We couldn’t afford to pay the overtime.” Preposterous: If they were really short on funds, they should have asked for volunteers. Lame and stupid ....

I wonder how many people have already volunteered.

The story doesn’t say if thay have ever asked for volunteers ..good heavens ... a Boy Scout troop or Vets association. I’d be outraged if I lived in this county.

Having volunteers may not help. Some employee with a key would have to show up if it like California there could be a state law which makes it illegal for an employee to volunteer to do work. They must be paid - by state law. It is very possible that they then must be paid a minimum of 4 hours for showing up to do work. On top of that there may be a union issue requiring security to be present any time the government building is opened, etc.

On the other hand, if the flagpole is outside, what’s stopping any citizen from raising their own flag on it? They already admitted that there won’t be any employees around to file a complaint!

Stories like this are just ugly.

I can’t fathom why they seem so frequent nowadays.

Just as I was bragging on the patriotism in central Florida. I guess this is the exception that proves the rule. The good people of Volusia County better let their elected officials know about their outrage. Shame on them.

Well ...well ...I just went to the VOLUSIA COUNTY WEBSITE and found this newsrelease ...call off the hounds! They caved to pressure ...some stories have a happy ending!

VOLUSIA COUNTY TO FLY FLAG ON MEMORIAL DAY

A statement to the media Friday that Volusia County does not fly the American flag on closed buildings on holidays was an administrative error that was following past practice and not the current policy of the Volusia County Council.

"Memorial Day is a day to honor our fallen soldiers, and we will fly the flags at the County's administration buildings and courthouses on this holiday and all other holidays," said County Chair Frank Bruno.

The County has always flown the flag 365 days a year at open buildings including its 24 fire stations.

That is the worst excuse I have ever heard. I am sure someone would have volunteered. I know I would have had I lived there. Bad, bad choice there.
