Pirate Master; Season Premier
My very own brain! (With a little help from the world wide web) | 5-10-2007 | Cuz It Aint Their Money

Posted on 05/14/2007 9:40:58 AM PDT by cuz_it_aint_their_money

Join 16 modern-day pirates as they embark on a high seas adventure around the Caribbean island of Dominica in search of hidden treasure that will total $1 million. Over the course of 33 days, the pirates will live aboard a massive 179-foot pirate ship.

Each week, these buccaneers will go on extraordinary expeditions and decipher clues along the way. Gold coins - real money that the pirates can take with them beyond the show - will be awarded after each treasure hunt, but only to some. The prized gold will then play a key role as pirates strike deals with each other and vie for long-term security.

Claiming the lion's share of the week's riches, one pirate will become the captain of the ship and will assign roles and chores to the remaining crew members, setting the tone for law and order or betrayal and sabotage, which could lead to mutiny by the crew. Such fates will be decided on the ship at Pirate's Court, a lively gathering of public speaking and judgment where one individual will be "cut adrift" every episode.

In the end, captain or not, only one pirate will win the largest booty, worth $500,000, and claim the title of "Pirate Master."

I’ve heard him referred to as Moe Ron.

(Psst! I drive too fast, too - but I LOVES it!)

ARRR! Mateys! It be Thursday, an’ that means it be time fer yer:

The Captain: J.D.
The Officers: Ben, Cheryl
The Crew: Alexis, Azmyth, Christa, Jay, Joy, Jupiter, Kendra, Laurel, Louie, Nessa, Sean
Sent ta Davy Jones’ Locker: John, Christian

ARRRRR!!!!! The title o’ tonight’s episode be “Bribes, Lies and Vengeful Eyes”

From the few vidcaps I’ve seen, it appears that the crew breakdown for tonight’s expedition is as follows:
The Black Crew consists of J.D., Ben, Cheryl, Alexis, Laurel, Joy and Sean.
The Red Crew consists of Jupiter, Jay, Christa, Nessa, Kendra, Louie and Azmyth.

There are also vidcaps indicating that the Black crew gets caught in the sabotage which means that the Red Crew is in the lead. Other vidcaps also show Azmyth and others from the Red Crew lifting what appears to be a treasure chest out of the raging waters under a waterfall.

Therefore, utilizing my impeccable powers of reasoning and logic, I can surmise the Red Crew wins the expedition. Which means, J.D. and his officers are finally demoted and since yet another vidcap shows Azmyth in full Captains garb, cutting the rope to set a crew member adrift, we now know that Azmyth is selected as the new Captain.

Who is the unlucky pirate to have his/her rope cut? My guess is Alexis.

But not to worry all you Alexis fans out there. There are also rumors and evidence to suggest that just because a crew member is “cut adrift” doesn’t mean that they are “out of the game for good.” But that’s all I’ll say for now.

Take Care,

ARRR! Send me a FReepmail if ya wants ta be added to the Pirate Master Ping List!

if his crew wins the next round, he better spread some of that loot to his team. I thought it was reeeeally dumb of him to let the crew know he’d given Jay money - now no one will trust him and it’s gonna be hard for Jay to be the eyes and ears of the Cap’n if the crew doesn’t want to tell him anything.

A big part of the problem, other than it's overly cheesy, of this show is we don't know the rules. Do the contestants know the rules either? Since they are pirates, wouldn't it be great if the crew stole Joe Don's money. They didn't take back the compasses from stripper boy so I'm at a loss on what's what.

…wouldn't it be great if the crew stole Joe Don's money…

From post #35 above:

TVGuide.com: Do they get to keep the money for good after each expedition, or can it be stolen?
Daddo: Good question. It is yours and it can't be stolen. It can be bartered and traded. It is used as currency to [build loyalty]. The money is real off the show. When you come to Pirates Court, you bring your money with you, because you might be leaving with it.

TVGuide.com: Could someone with a black mark bribe someone else with cash?
Daddo: Absolutely! And don't think I didn't suggest it! At the end you are after $500,000. What's five grand apiece when you're making sure they don't cast a ballot your way? Do they use it? We will see.

I’m likin’ the hints, there, Cap’n Cuz! I’m also thinkin’ they’ll keep ol’ “Moe Ron” around simply to humiliate his ass whenever possible. But only for awhile.

Azymuth is good TV - well, he’s good TV now that they’ve actually started giving him some screen time. I hope Loupert doesn’t imply mutiny this week as well - he was sounding like a broken record.

ARRR! Mateys! It be Monday and time fer a recap. So without further ado, here be yer:

The Captain: Azmyth
The Officers: Jay, Jupiter
The Crew: Azmyth, Ben, Cheryl, Christa, J. D., Joy, Kendra, Laurel, Louie, Nessa, Sean
Sent ta Davy Jones’ Locker: John, Christian, Alexis

Episode 3: Bribes, Lies and Vengeful Eyes

Attitude Adjustment: Alexis is Cut Adrift

After the latest Expedition, the crew's morale starts to improve when Joe Don's reign as Captain comes to an end. Making things even better, the new Captain, Azmyth, takes a new approach, choosing to share the treasure with everyone on the Red Crew. Even though spirits are high, fashion publicist Alexis still can't find much to cheer about. Her shipmates tire of her constant complaining, and Alexis finds herself to be one of the three marked Pirates at Pirates' Court. After the ballots are counted adding up to a tie, the new Captain makes the final decision: Alexis' voyage has come to an end.

After Alexis is cut adrift, she takes a moment to reflect on her final Pirates' Court. "I thought I was going in front of the firing squad," she says with a hint of relief. "I mean, I'm surprised that I didn't take more hits than I did. I think I earned some respect on that ship and I think that that proved itself to be true on that final vote and you know, it is what it is. So, I gotta keep rolling."

A Crew Divided
It's a sad night on the Picton Castle when Louie and Kendra commiserate over the loss of Christian, who has just been cut adrift. "We're gonna be known as the morons that threw off a killer Pirate," Louie says sadly.

Meanwhile in the Captain's quarters, Joe Don meets Cheryl, who brings up the fact that the crew is upset over Christian's departure. She mentions that everyone expects to be friends on this ship before pointing out, "We're here for a purpose and they're not seeing that."

On deck, Louie continues to chat with his fellow shipmates about his disdain for Joe Don. Sean chimes in and they complain about Cheryl's worthlessness and Joe Don's abuse of power; "I can't wait to cut him loose, man," Louie states with a newfound determination.

Pirates on Top of the World
As the Pirates start to wake up in the cabin below, Joe Don shares a moment with his Bosun, Jay, on the ship's deck. Jay takes the opportunity to further solidify his alliance with his Captain by reassuring him that, "Nobody knows how much I got your back." However, Joe Don is unaware that Jay's loyalty is still only based on financial rewards.

Jupiter spends the morning decorating her shipmates' faces with her creative application of eye makeup. However, she is interrupted whey Jay orders the crew to raise the flag and set sail. Joe Don watches his crew raise the sails and comments, "We're gonna go to the next treasure, north of the island, and head out on an Expedition later on today and it should be full of adventure and fun." When Jupiter climbs up the rigging and helps raise the sails, she marvels at this one-of-a-kind experience. "I feel like I'm on top of the world right now," she exclaims. Laurel takes a moment to explain how important this experience is to her as well, revealing that she has been living in a van for the past year and a half. "Being a Pirate is more about the state of mind than anything", she explains. "Doesn't matter if you're on a boat or in a van." While everyone else seems to be enjoying the Pirate experience, Alexis seems less enthusiastic than her shipmates. After taking a moment to complain about the constant work that has to be done on the ship, she says, "I'm like, sore and tired. I feel like a log and it's not fun."

A Treasure's Secret Written in Blood
The ship drops anchor and host Cameron Daddo calls the crew to the deck. Cameron shows everybody the key to the next compartment in the Chest of Zanzibar and Joe Don chooses Jay to open the next compartment. Jay uses the key and retrieves two scrolls and a letter written by Captain Henry Steel from the chest. While reading the letter to the crew, Cameron reveals that this particular treasure was hidden by the ship's Quarter Master. "He was a bloodthirsty pirate who reveled in writing secret code in blood," Cameron explains. "The blood was rarely his own."

Cameron informs everyone that the Captain and his Officers will lead the Black Crew again while everybody else will be randomly divided onto the Crews once they pick shot from the bag. Everyone also learns that if the Red Crew wins, Joe Don will be unseated as Captain and a new Captain will be chosen. The Pirates then proceed to pick their shot and receive either a red or black sash. When Louie picks a red shot, a big smile appears on his face. "I am way happy to be on the opposite team as the Captain because I wanna crush him and I'm gonna write a letter to his Momma in his blood," he says gleefully. "I'm ready to take the reign of Joe Don down." Once everyone receives a sash, the Black Crew consists of Joe Don. Cheryl, Ben, Sean, Joy, Alexis, and Laurel while the Red Crew includes Kendra, Jupiter, Christa, Nessa, Azmyth, Louie, and Jay. When Jay realizes that the fiercest competitor from the last Expedition, Azmyth, is on his team, he is sure the Red Crew can win this. Azmyth's competitive edge hasn't waned either as he explains, "Obviously the team that I'm on is gonna win, so I've got the blood pumping, anxious to get in that boat, anxious to get on this Expedition and find that treasure." As the longboats are lowered for their next Expedition, Joe Don wonders whether or not he'll remain Captain, but he reveals what he'll do if he gets a big score: "I'll be drinking rum tonight."

Strong Currents and Weak Pirates

With a gunshot echoing across the sea, the Expedition begins as both longboats head to shore. On the first leg of this Expedition, the Pirates must paddle ashore and follow their maps up a treacherous trail. When they see a sword and skull along the way, the leading crew can sabotage the crew that follows and slow them down.

As both longboats approach the shore, a strong current provides the first real challenge. Both crews start the Expedition neck and neck until most of the Black Crew has to jump over the side and push their longboat up over the sandbar. As both crews struggle to reach land, Joe Don notices Alexis walking away while the rest of her crew tries to push the boat to shore. When Sean notices this too, he's shocked at her inability to help her team.

Scary Sabotage: Buried Beneath Bamboo
The Red Crew reaches the shore first and immediately heads up the trail, with Azmyth in the lead. He quickly finds the sword and skull, which will trigger the sabotage point. The Black Crew trails behind, but soon starts to catch up as they trek up the narrow, muddy trail through the forest. Sean and Azmyth both arrive at the sabotage point at the same time and Sean takes a moment to examine the dangerous bamboo trap, realizing that it could definitely put the losing team behind because it's so difficult to climb over. Everyone else arrives at the sabotage point at the same time, and Sean and Azmyth hurriedly try to get the rest of their crews through the walkway before the sabotage is triggered and the bamboo falls. Once Azmyth sees that his fellow Red Crew members have all made it safely, he cuts the rope, unleashing a downpour of bamboo upon many members of the Black Crew. Luckily, Sean is able to hold up a large part of the bamboo structure, allowing the rest of the Black Crew to scuttle past. Once he and the rest of the Black Crew emerge from the fallen structure safely, the group continues up the trail.

In Search of Skulls

At the end of the trail, both crews must cross a raging river and locate a headless skeleton above a Blood Rock. This will lead the crews to the head of the skeleton, which contains the key to the treasure. Both crews arrive at the edge of the river and proceed to jump in, treading rushing waters as they cross to the other side where they find the rock containing the next clue. Kendra and Christa examine the symbols that appear on the rock and realize that it is coded word for "Key," realizing they need to find a hidden skull underwater that contains the key to the treasure. Everyone frantically searches underwater until Louie emerges from the river with the skull in hand, putting the Red Crew in the lead. Jay excitedly smashes the skull against a rock and removes the key.

With the key in hand, the crews must now locate a nearby waterfall, which contains the hidden treasure. While the Red Crew hunts for the waterfall, the Black Crew continues to search for another skull so they can also have a chance at finding the treasure. Nessa is the first one to see the treasure behind the waterfall and the rest of her crew joins her. Louie reaches through the water and excitedly retrieves the treasure chest. As Jupiter raises the Red Crew's flag and Nessa fires the Blunderbuss, Louie dedicates his victory to Christian, yelling, "This is for my brother!" The Red Crew cheers while the Black Crew stands disappointed in the middle of the rushing river.

Joe Don's Reign Ends
As the Black Crew returns to the ship with their heads hung low, Joe Don starts to worry about how everything will unfold now that his reign as Captain is over. "I've got a target on me. I'm aware of it," he confesses. In front of the other shipmates, Cameron relieves Joe Don, Ben, and Cheryl of their command and orders them to turn in their outfits and rejoin the rest of the crew below deck. As Cheryl heads downstairs, she worries about how she will mix with a crew who until now has looked upon her as if she was never one of them. Below deck, Ben compliments Joe Don when he says it has been a pleasure to serve with him, but Joe Don is preoccupied. "Louie's got it out for me," he explains. "I feel I could get a Black Spot today."

Three Cheers for Captain Azmyth
The Red Crew excitedly brings their treasure onboard, pouring the gold coins on deck so they can count their riches. Cameron asks Jay how it feels to win and Jay admits, "I was starting to think that maybe I was a bad luck charm." Joe Don emerges from below deck as the Red Crew continues to count, turning in the Captain's hat and jacket. Louie laughs at Joe Don's "puppy dog face" when he passes his items over and comments, "It was a sad day for Joe Don and he's got many more sad days to come." Once every coin is counted, Cameron informs the crew that the treasure is worth $35,000 and that it is now time to elect a new Captain. The Red Crew unanimously chooses Azmyth to be their new leader because of his performance on the Expeditions. Azmyth then chooses Jupiter and Jay to be his Officers, and the treasure is divided, with half going to the new Captain, a quarter going to his Officers, and the remaining quarter to be split up amongst the rest of the crew. Cameron informs Azmyth that his first order of duty will involve picking the three Pirates who will be marked with the Black Spot, one of whom will most likely be cut adrift at Pirates' Court.

Azmyth Puts Accent on Surprise
After donning the Captain's hat and jacket, Azmyth invites his two Officers into the Captain's quarters, where he wants to discuss money. As Jay and Jupiter sit down, Azmyth brings forth a new proposition. "I'd really like to suggest more monies for the rest of the Red Crew," he states with a newly developed English accent. Jay is surprised to hear Azmyth's new way of speaking and finds it "utterly ridiculous" because it sounds "like somebody gave him an English pill." Azmyth outlines his plan to reward the Red Crew with more money in order to keep them happy, while Jay grumbles about not getting a bigger cut because of Azmyth's "utopian society where everybody's equal." Nessa is the first Pirate called into the Captain's quarters and she shivers with excitement when she learns that everyone on the crew will be receiving more money. As other shipmates are called in one by one to collect their additional gold coins, everyone notes how different it is without Joe Don as Captain. "Azmyth is Mr. Positivity. He's trying to show that a nice guy can be a pirate," comments Christa. "But ugh, that accent is so on my nerves."

Below deck, Nessa and Louie rejoice over Azmyth's redistribution of the treasure. "Dude, it's 180 degrees, it's so much better," exclaims Nessa. Louie even notices something funny in how Azmyth walks around with his new Captain's hat. "I think there's some kind of dope in that cap that goes straight into your brain as soon as you put it on your head," laughs Louie.

Black Spot Anyone?
Later, in the Captain's Quarters, Azmyth meets with Jay and Jupiter to discuss the Black Spots. Azmyth starts to mention that some Pirates aren't that strong, noting, "We're gonna get to the point where we have a bunch of floaters and we have to flush the toilet as it may be." Everyone agrees that Alexis should be the first recipient of the Black Spot because of her problematic attitude. Jay brings up a choice out of left field, nominating Laurel for the Black Spot because she hasn't stood out one way or another and she's always pulling up the rear on the Expeditions. When Azmyth proposes the idea of putting Joe Don up there, Jay starts to squirm because of his alliance with the former Captain. "Basically, Joe Don knows if he keeps me happy financially, that I'll take care of him," Jay later explains. Pulling the focus away from Joe Don, Jay nominates Cheryl as another Black Spot recipient because he has no loyalty to her. Jay thinks his nominations are fair, so he leaves the final decision for Azmyth and Jupiter.

The Black Spots Revealed: A Crew Divided... Again

Captain Azmyth and his Officers meet their crew on the ship's deck to give out the letters, three of which contain the Black Spot. When Alexis opens her letter, she comments, "I'm not surprised I got the Black Spot, I was somewhat expecting it. My personality can be hard for people to swallow and that's their problem, not mine." Laurel has the opposite reaction when she opens her letter, shocked to see a Black Spot. "I don't even know what my case is," she explains. "So, I'm just gonna try to stay positive, only I'm not gonna talk about the other people. I'm just gonna talk about myself and why I'm so cool and good." Joe Don expects to see a Black Spot, but instead his former Officer, Cheryl, receives the tarnished letter. Cheryl doesn't get emotional when she sees her Black Spot, confident she can use her skills as a Deputy District Attorney to convince the crew she's right.

After the Black Spots have been handed out, the crew starts to discuss how they will vote that night. Jay explains to Louie that he wants Cheryl gone because he's tired of her looking down her nose at him. Louie agrees with Jay as he continues his quest to cut Joe Don adrift. "If I can't take the head of the snake, I'll take the tail," he explains. "She's just guilty by association." Nessa and Christa also agree that it's Cheryl's time to go. Joe Don notices that a lot of the crew wants Cheryl gone, so he turns to his former Officer, Ben, in an attempt to form an alliance to keep Cheryl safe. "When you start trying to pick off people that are my people, I gotta bust it up, man," says Joe Don. "My best case scenario will be that Alexis goes tonight."

Money Talks and Cheryl Must Walk
Jay continues to approach the crew about Cheryl, hoping to sway the vote his way because his status as an Officer prevents him from voting at Pirates' Court. As he talks to the crew, he thinks he can control Christa, Louie, Kendra, and Nessa, but he needs one more vote to secure Cheryl's departure. That vote lies with Sean. Jay soon realizes Sean's vote may be hard to come by since Sean wants Alexis to leave; he views her as a liability. To convince Sean that Cheryl needs to go, he turns to the gold coins he received as Joe Don's Bosun and pays Sean a thousand dollars to bribe him into seeing things his way. Sean accepts the money, but he's still conflicted over the vote because he views Cheryl as a strong female competitor. "I am the swing vote, so if I do lie, they'll know," Sean explains. "I've got a lot on my mind right now. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do just yet."

Meanwhile, below deck, Jay and Louie are convinced that Pirates' Court is now under their control. Jay explains to Louie that there's no way Sean could go against them because he has now been paid off. "He's golden or he's out in the cold, so it's up to him," Jay says confidently.

Pirates' Court – An English Azmyth

As night falls, the crew gathers on the ship's deck for another Pirates' Court. Cameron informs everyone that one of the three marked Pirates will be cut adrift tonight unless everyone rises together and votes for a Mutiny against their new Captain. Cameron mentions the change in power since the last Expedition, noting a change in mood on the ship since the new Captain was named. Azmyth describes the situation by saying, "Things are much lighter now, spirits are higher and we now have a new hierarchy in power." As Azmyth finishes his sentence, Cameron notices his new British accent, but Azmyth is quick to point out that the crew seems to like it. After he's asked why he marked these three Pirates, Azmyth explains that Alexis was marked because of her attitude, Laurel was marked because she floats by and Cheryl was marked because of her inability to fit in with the crew. When Jay is asked if he agrees with the decision to mark Cheryl, he mentions the fact that Cheryl separated herself from the rest of the crew when she was in a position of power. He tells her, "I kind of felt as though you looked down upon us and that was the reason that I actually helped make sure that you got the Black Spot."

The Marked Pirates Defend While Alexis Offends

Alexis steps forward to defend herself and makes no effort to subdue her volatile attitude. "I'm me and I haven't put up any fronts or any façade or tried to do any sugarcoated 'this-is-me' tap dance for any of you," she proclaims. "So, you know what you're getting." Laurel is the next one up and she uses her likeable nature to appeal to her fellow shipmates. Laurel informs the crew that she wants to stay on the ship, saying, "I would pretty much do anything for you guys. I don't have a problem working on the boat, I love going to the expeditions." When it's Cheryl's turn to defend herself, she uses her courtroom skills to mount a multilayered defense. She begins by discussing the importance of teamwork and then brings up the difficulties she faced when assuming the role of Joe Don's Officer. "It was almost a negative for me because I didn't get to create those bonds that the crew got to create initially." She also stresses the importance of her physical capabilities on the Expeditions. Joe Don comes to Cheryl's aide when he takes responsibility for not allowing his Officers to intermingle with the crew. He stresses Cheryl's strengths before pointing out that Alexis will never change. Alexis takes offense and retorts, "That's interesting coming from you. You just came down from your post where you stood for several days with no interaction with the crew. I mean, I appreciate your opinion, but I really don't think it's fair." Once things cool down, Cameron turns to the Captain and asks if he has anything to say, knowing Mutiny is always an option. Azmyth doesn't seem worried. He champions his new reign by pointing out that morale is way up and that everything is fantastic.

It's a Tie: The Captain Decides

It's time to make a decision and one by one, the Pirates place their ballots atop the dagger's blade to secure their vote. Cameron examines the ballots and reveals that there are no Mutiny cards, and that Laurel is safe. Cheryl and Alexis wait to see which one of them will be cut adrift, but they're surprised to learn that each have four ballots against them. That means Sean, as the swing vote, has taken Jay's bribe to cast his ballot for Cheryl, but voted for Alexis instead. Cameron informs Azmyth that in the event of the tie, the Captain must choose which Pirate will be cut adrift. Azmyth takes a moment to think, looks at the two marked Pirates and says, "I have to take into consideration the next Expedition that we're going to be going on. I have to take in the consensus of the crew." He then takes a pause before saying, "I'll have to choose Alexis to be set adrift."

With that, Azmyth walks to the edge of the ship, sword in hand, ready to cut Alexis adrift. "You're a good man," says Joe Don as he watches Azmyth cut the rope, leaving Alexis to float out to sea.

I agree. I tend to agree with Loupert...there's something in that hat that changes people!

How's that old saying go about absolute power corrupting absolutely?

ARRR! Mateys! It be Thursday, an’ that means it be time fer yer:

The Captain: Azmyth
The Officers: Jay, Jupiter
The Crew: Azmyth, Ben, Cheryl, Christa, J.D., Joy, Kendra, Laurel, Louie, Nessa, Sean
Sent ta Davy Jones’ Locker: John, Christian, Alexis

ARRRRR!!!!! The title o’ tonight’s episode be “Death by Coconuts”

From the few vidcaps I’ve seen, it appears that the crew breakdown for tonight’s expedition is as follows:
The Black Crew consists of Azmyth, Jay, J.D., Jupiter, Laurel, Christa, Cheryl.
The Red Crew consists of Louie, Ben, Sean, Joy, Nessa, Kendra.

There are also vidcaps of the Red Crew furesously digging in the mud and Sean lifting what appears to be a treasure chest over his head in victory. So… It looks like the Red Crew wins and we get a new Captain. And it looks as if Ben is selected to be the new Captain. Why they pick Ben over Sean or Louie (or any of the women for that matter!) is anybody’s guess.

Who is the unlucky pirate to have his/her rope cut? My guess is Cheryl.

But like I said last week! Don’t worry if you’re a big Cheryl fan. The “rumors” and evidence that suggests that just because a crew member is “cut adrift” doesn’t mean that they are “out of the game for good”, comes in the form of the following vidcap showing a “White Crew”.

You can clearly make out Christian, Alexis and John in this vidcap. And my guess is that Cheryl is just out of the picture, in front of Christian, Joy is in the back and the male with his face covered is no other than our first Captain Joe Don. That means that our next three pirates to be cut adrift are Cheryl, Joy and Joe Don. (Maybe not necessary in that order, but they are the next three none the less.)

As far as this show moving to Tuesday nights, while I personally haven’t seen or read anything to confirm this, I don’t doubt it in the least. After all, the ratings have been, shall we say, somewhat lacking.

Anyway, I’ll be back Monday with my recap.

On board for tonight's show.

Still - They sure did pick a bunch of new age people for this first crew. I mean the bunch of them are just plain weird.

I agree with you 100%! I'm struggling with this show.

Struggling with this show also but will watch to the end. Then will make an opinion if I really like it.

By the way, is there any historical evidence of female pirate captains? If not, maybe that’s why no females have been picked to be captain in this show.

Some of the romance novels I’ve read have had female pirates. We all know those books are based on fact ;-)

Ok. Then there should be no problem having a female captain on this show.

It appears “Lupert” does not have the personality, wit or charm of the original Rupert.

Appears to have a real case of the tight jaws with “Ding Dong” JD. I think his little rant at P. Court may have given some others food for thought. Close, split vote.
