90-year-old San Antonio man attacked by pit bulls

SAN ANTONIO — Two pit bulls that managed to get into a San Antonio home mauled a sleeping 90-year-old man with Alzheimer's disease, authorities said.
Selestino Rangel was in critical condition at University Hospital.
Authorities said the dogs bit the man all over his body. The dogs appeared to have pulled Rangel from his bedroom into the living room, leaving a trail of blood.
"This is the worst case I've seen in my career," San Antonio fire acting Lt. Robert Jacinto said in a story in the online edition of the San Antonio Express-News.
Sarah Green, the dog's owner, had secured the animals in the back yard before leaving for work late Saturday, according to a police report.
Caregiver Alejandra Haynes and her 5-year-old daughter arrived about an hour later. The child saw the man and the dogs, alerting her mother to the scene of Rangel in a pool of blood on the living room floor with the dogs sitting behind him. The two ran from the scene.
Firefighters opened the back door and the dogs ran into the yard so rescuers could get into the house to care for Rangel.
Authorities weren't sure what caused the attack or how the dogs got into the house.
Green said the dogs knew how to open the back door, according to the police report. Haynes said Rangel sometimes tries to open doors when he is nervous.
The dogs were placed in quarantine at the Animal Care Services until the owner can prove their rabies shots are current.
A hearing will be held to decide the animals' fates.
Haynes said her daughter had played with the dogs before, and that they hadn't shown any real aggression.

Words fail me. She left a sleeping man with dementia alone, and the dogs “knew how to open the back door.”
I guess the dogs are smarter than Sarah, unfortunately.
That door opening skill isn't all that surprising. The first dog I owned as an adult, half black lab and half Irish Setter, taught himself how to open the door at the top of the stairs from my basement to the rest of my townhouse. It was really neat when I had my hands full and was climbing the stairs since I'd just tell him to open to door and he'd do it.
