Questions on buying and owning a boat in New York.
Vanity ^ | may 11. 2007 | Sonny

Just a few questions for freepers. I'm looking into buying a houseboat here in NYC, and I've never bought or owned a boat before, what do I need to know.

I.E. Do I need to have insurance, or some kind of drivers licience or an equivalent of it?

What are slip fee's usually for docking a boat at the marina's in New York?

Is it hard to find a place to dock the boat?

Is there laws about living on the boat?

What kind of permits do I need, and how do I register ownership of the boat, is there an agency or something that I would need to contact?

I really would appreciate any and all help.

Don’t know if NYC has any special ‘liscense’ requirement, but I know New York State doesn’t.

Insurance is only required to protect you, but not required by the state.

“What are slip fee’s usually for docking a boat at the marina’s in New York?”

Depends upon the Marina.

“Is it hard to find a place to dock the boat?”

Still depends upon where you want to dock it, and what ‘slips’ are available.

“Is there laws about living on the boat?”

Ask the Marina where you want to dock it. Some allow it, others don’t. Some have ‘boat’ parks. Similar to trailer parks.

“What kind of permits do I need, and how do I register ownership of the boat,”

No permits that I know of and registering a boat is as simple as registering a car, except no insurance is necessary.

“s there an agency or something that I would need to contact?”

Go to any Marina and ask. They are generally very helpful.

Short story about houseboats. When I was a little girl we went to our boat camp during the summers. Our was one of those houses on stilts. One summer, there was a houseboat tethered at the landing next to ours.

We were outside crabbing on the wharf and we see smoke coming from the houseboat, we started screaming to our mom and pop. Everybody around came running. The next thing you know a naked man and woman come running out of that burning houseboat. Our mama started screaming at us to stop looking at the fire.

It was the first time I ever saw a naked man and woman. It wasn't until I was older and wiser that I understood what she really wanted to say and didn't. This was the late fifties and nudity was now where to be seen.

TIP: always keep a bathrobe next to the door encase a hasty exit is required. :-)

The first thing I would suggest is that you let the feeling of buying a boat pass you by like a, well, like a ship in the night.

However, if you are somehow convinced that you have too much money and you need a pit to throw it all in, then read on...

I presume you are looking for at least one stateroom and a galley. I also presume you’ll be buying a used boat.

Are you trained in sailing? If not, do you want to be? If so, then a sailboat will be more economical than a motorboat. Wood is more work but some prefer it.

If you don’t want to invest as much effort while underway, then motor is the way to go. However, this is an endless argument so don’t just take my word for it. If you think filling up an SUV with gas is expensive, then again, please let the feeling of buying a boat pass you by and get a spa instead.

Once you’ve given that some thought and you want to dock someplace close to the city, you’re basically looking at Queens or New Jersey. If you’re in Manhattan, I would suggest Liberty Landing in Jersey City (http://www.libertylandingmarina.com/). It’s easy to get to by ferry and the cost is within reason. (Ha Ha Ha Ha! That was a funny joke)

Enjoy you’re adventure!

Is this about fear he New York will be flooded because of global warming? If not I we share this. My great uncle was harbor pilot for New York Harbor he also ran a salvage business in the harbor. None of this knowledge has been passed on to except that this is rarely a way to save money for housing anywhere.

Sounds like a good idea. I’ve thought of living on a houseboat myself, though the ones I could afford weren’t too appealing.

Down the Mississippi River and beyond!

I posted once, then seems it disappeared. I’ll try again.

I think the houseboat is a good idea. I’ve thought of living on one also. But the only ones I could afford were not very appealing.

Anyway, hope it goes well for you. I still may get me one and float down the Mississippi River one of these days! Seems it would be a peaceful life.

In DC, there is a very...interesting...culture down on the water.

I can point you to a marina less than a mile from the Capital, where you can park a 35’ boat for $100/month.

Don’t do it. LOL.

After all the research, I decided not to get the boat and instead to do a home renovation and expand my house.

At least I get more space one way.
