WELLINGTON, New Zealand- A plucky foot-high Jack Russell terrier named George saved five New Zealand children from two marauding pitbulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight he had to be destroyed, his owner said Wednesday. George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pitbulls appeared and lunged toward them, his owner Allan Gay said.

"George was brave—he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

It’s stories like this that remind me of the old Mark Twain statement about the difference between dogs and man.

I want a Jack Russell, mostly because they are cute, little, hyper dogs. I used to watch Wishbone on PBS with my kids and thought Wishbone was adorable.

Sad that George had to be put down because of these monsters but what a brave little dog to protect those kids.

Mine are definitely fearless and the fact that there are a lot of other dogs around here necessitates a good fence.

Good dog! A posthumous "Eddie" award and all the heavenly bones and fire hydrants George could want!

Something to the effect that the difference between a starving dog and man is that if you feed and care for the dog, he not only will never turn on you, but will protect you with his life if necessary.

Contrast that to our professional entitlement class.

They are definitely wired, no question. However 'hyper' can get old fast as many former owners find out when they let the 'cute' aspect cloud their judgment. Jack Russell terriers are a lot of dog in a small package. Be prepared.

It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog!

When I read the headline I knew it was a JR...they have no fear of anything and assume they are as tough or tougher than any dog bigger or badder.... I know God has a spot in heaven for this one....

Really think twice about a JR....they can be wonderful companions but they bored easy and need jobs to do or else they will get into trouble....You need to have a real strong alpha personality or they will rule or ruin your world....if you like terriers look at the border terrier....they are a little calmer and easier to handle....my friend breeds them and calls them pure bred mutts...

Jack Russells are very special dogs, astonishingly intelligent, but definitely not for everyone. If there is such a thing as canine OCD, they have it. They are intense little things and require an intense amount of attention.

If you’re looking for an intelligent, spirited small dog without quite as much energy, I would recommend the Boston Terrier. They are short haired and don’t present the shedding problem JRs do, are extremely affectionate, and while they are pretty energetic, they are much easier to take than JRs. Except for the snoring.

Well said. JRT buyer’s remorse is not uncommon.

Do your research first and make sure you aren’t biting off more than you can chew! TV dogs are not the same as dogs in real life, and getting one from a... less-than-conscientious breeder can be disastrous.

Moose, the dog on Frasier, was one such dog. He was destroying the owner's house and was slated to be put down. The person who handles him for the show found him and as you can see from the show, he's happy there... because he has constant work.
