Do People You Dont Know Call You By Your First Name?

Do you know how bad it chaps my butt when I go thru security in the airport and a moron I never met, checking my ticket, starts calling me by my fiirst name? what happened to a little "Mr. Name"? and its not just there. EVERYwhere now people just automatically call you by your first name.

Am I the only one who is bugged by this little loss of respect?

Just another reason we are doomed.

About 15 years ago I had a battle with the IRS. The clerk we were dealing with always called me Mr....... She had her name plate on her desk and I started calling her by her first name, just to pi$$ her off and put her on defense.

Yes, I see what you mean now. I would be a little more specific when posting a vanity to start a conversation, hence some of the replies you got. I think most people mean well, but everything has become so casual. Remember looking at the crowds in baseball games? 90 degrees, 30 thousand people in suits, ties and hats, I sweat a lot, good thing I wasn’t a fan in those days.

Have you ever been addressed as 'bud'? Seems to be the new thing in certain parts of the country. My response ... I'm not your 'bud' ... you have a problem with that???
I cleaned this up a little but you get the idea.

You don’t have to call me Darlin’, Darlin’. You never even call me by my name.

No, you aren’t the only one bugged about it. I dislike it intensely when grocery store clerks, tellers, nurses, doctors, telemarketers and so forth call me by my first name when, of course, their name is completely unknown to me. (I think part of it is the frustration of getting the title right: “that’s MS, buster, not Miss” and part of it is some misguided idea that we are flattered by someone knowing our name.) But I feel like my privacy is violated when someone I don’t know addresses me in public or on the phone by my first name. When I want people to know me by my first name, I will give them that name. Otherwise it’s Mrs. caseinpoint.

I wonder if the famous writer Ford Madox Ford ever had this problem.

Guess not

You know what I hate along those same lines? When the bartenders at chilis do that. A lot of restaurant chains now ask your first name when you sit down. I always say Joe, or something like that.

2nd on my list of annoyances, which must be the result of some focus group study, is when the waitresses come up to you and say "Is everything excellent"?. I mean, yeah, it's ok. But really, what are you supposed to say in return?

I was always taught that the respectful thing to do was first address them as Ms./Mr. - but if they request that I call them another name, then the respectful course of action is to oblige their wishes.

Try this: next time they ask your name say "Alouicious" pronounced al-lou-ish-us . watch them figure that out. and smile while they sweat.
