Try using a much larger kitty litter box—my male cat was doing the same thing when we first got him, and he was fixed too—we got a giant plastic storage tub (about 2 foot tall and 3 feet wide) and started using that for him...Febreze also works well in getting rid of odors!
Good luck with the kitty and ignore the ignoramuses on this thread who obviously don’t like cats. Pppppppppbbbbbbbbttttttt! to them!
My adult daughter was broken hearted about a cat she got from the shelter, had it neutered, had it in a one bedroom apartment in Chicago and it marked all around the entry hallway. She tried everything for about a year and a half l, a cat psychologist, changing the brand of litter, having many litter boxes, changing the food, giving it lots of exercise, but it was marking her hallway as a way of owning the territory (others walked their dogs or cats in the hallway.) It was a marvelous cat in other ways and very bright. He would play fetch with you for hours at a time if you let him and he wasn’t a scratcher. In much desperation, she took it to her vet who had her sign over the cat to her and the vet had it as an office cat and he did really fine there. Everyone is really animal lovers in our family so it wasn[t lack of love. Sometimes you get cats that do that and with my daughter’s cat, the older he got, the worse it got.
I would try and return the cat or talk to the vet about the cat and see what he or she suggests. It is very unpleasant to have that oder around especially with a new house and kids. Maybe the cat could be a mouser in someone’s barn. With our daughter’s cat, it was just too confined an environment for that particular cat.

“Suggestion: send him out in the neighborhood; neutered male cats seldom last long out there; they cant resist trying to be real tomcats, but they always get their asses kicked. Since I found that out, we have always had fixed-females.”

I had a neutered male cat who was just the opposite....he kicked all the other cats arses.
Honestly,
get a new wife.
Keep the cat.
He can try to spray all day long, and nothing will happen.
He’ll probably start farting instead.
I would take the cat to a vet. There may be a simple solution.
I would also start looking for a new wife. A woman that would break her kids’ hearts and orphan an animal just because of this is going to make your life, and your kids’ lives, hell for the rest of her life.
Seriously.
I hear cat tastes like chicken
Cat For Sale
A well-known art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store.
The collector does a double take. He sees that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable. He walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars.
The store owner replies, “I’m sorry, but the cat isn’t for sale.”
The collector says, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I’ll pay you 20 dollars for that cat.”
“Sold!” says the store owner and he hands over the cat.
The collector continues, “Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat seems to be used to it and it’ll save me from having to get a dish.”
The owner says, “Sorry buddy, but that’s my lucky saucer. So far this week I’ve sold sixty-eight cats.”
If you have ever dealt with an animal that expresses itself, trust me, farts are a DREAM compared to when they express... you cannot fathom the stench of an animal expressing its anal glands until you have experienced it.
Check with your local vet (possibly the same one who did the neutering surgery?) and they’ll give you a price. IIRC, it’s not outrageous.
“I hear cat tastes like chicken”
No, it really does taste like cat. Its when you use lots of terryaki sause that it begins to taste like chicken.
General Tsaos frying method really makes the difference.
Barbeque on a stick with lots of soy sauces and it tastes more like roasted monkey.
Cats, the other white meat!
My cat refuses to touch his clean water in the water bowl. He prefers to climb up to our fish tank and drink the gold fish water. He won’t eat the fish, but drinks their water.
We had a cat that would spray. But he only sprayed the guy who was living with us. And that was usually when he was all dolled up for a date.
8-)
This cat also used to go after this guys feet in the middle of the night. It was great fun for him to bite his feet and get chased around the room for a while till he ducked into a place people couldn’t reach. The whole problem quit when this guy moved out.
How old was he when he was neutered? I’ve had several male cats and none of them sprayed once they were neutered but they do take a while for the hormone levels to drop down so give him a few weeks. Plus, in that time he might grow on your wife.
What part of Ca. are you in?
Check these guys out: http://www.nccn.net/~paleague/
They will take your cat and find him a home if you absolutely have to get rid of him. Please don’t take him to the pound.
I thought that when cats were neutered they couldn’t scent mark anymore.
The older the cat is when he’s neutered the longer he can spray afterward. This happened to me with a stray boy a long time ago.
Ask the vet if there’s anything further you can do.
You can always quarantine the guy, depending on what the vet says. He should know the stats on how long the cat might spray.
One more thing, is it an indoor or outdoor cat?
If he’s an in/out cat, please consider keeping him exclusively indoors, they live longer, avoid females in heat, and cost less with the vet in the long run.
I think that sounds like what is going on here. We have sold our house and there is some major construction going on outside. It must be making him nervous.
Too funny.
Luckily my wife likes cats almost as much as I do.
