This is a poll at the Michael Silence blog.
Bullit- Best chase of all time.
But, it just doesn't sound the same. For example, 'Shifting Gears', the music leading up to the chase: In the original, the bass trombone (one of the most fun instruments to play, BTW) has this really edgy punch to it, ratcheting up the tension and suspense. On the studio recording, the dude is trying as hard as he can to have the nice dark centered, mellow tone that he was taught in school. Boring.
So when I want to hear the 'Bullitt' soundtrack, I have to put in the movie, and switch between scenes to hear what I want.
Darn. Lucy Hunts Uranium isn’t there.
I took the car to a store and did some shopping and on the way home, I had an honest-to-God brake failure at the top of some hillstreet named Van-something.
I don't remember how many 'Bullit' crossroads I went through, I'm guessing 3 - 5 ... and every one was a heart attack.
I know I'm saved because the angels kept all cross traffic from my point of entry.
(I should add that the brakes went out during a down shift ... I never caught the gear ... I was in neutral all the way).
When I got to the bottom of the hill, I was able to steer the thing off to the side and scraped along a curb 'till I stopped.
I'd forgotten that until this thread.
Yup ... BULLIT.
Come on.No contest Bullit.
The “wrong way” scene in “To Live And Die In LA” was cool, but Bullit was the greatest.
Oh yeah. DUEL. Not one word of dialog in the entire film.
Steven Speilberg’s first movie.
Other way around, wasn't it? Until the worm turned. Great scene, though. With quotes from Herman Melville at the end (Ahab's curse).
Anyway, that was a submarine-hunt type scenario, borrowed from ee.g. The Bedford Incident, Das Boot, and Run Silent, Run Deep.
Best cars in a chase... Bullit
Best chase Live and Die in LA
... and in the opening scene where 'Police Squad' drive thru all manner of humanity in order to pull over traffic scofflaw Zha Zha Gabor, who then defiantly walks up to the squad car and *slaps* its flashing red lights on top :)
Duel? That movie cracks me up. Chester freaks out when he gets up to 60 MPH.
The freeway chase in Matrix Reloaded.
(dons flame suit)
OK ... Yeah .. I agree .... Tremont Street into Boston from Forest Hills Station..
Great movie.
Also Vanishing Point.
But Bullitt owns the category.
Blues brothers....i think, because it was creatively done and stupid funny too.
Well, there were a couple of monologues from Dennis Weaver.
But you're all right -- it's still a film classic, like William Shatner's piece on that old TV episode of The Twilight Zone.
What was the chase where every car going around a corner smashed into a parked VW Microbus and in the end the flattened VW fell over onto its side? That is my candidate for best un-serious car chase. I think it was a Goldie Hawn movie with or without Chevy Chase. The dwarf in a barrel was pretty cool too, but that didn’t involve a car.
Yep, Bullit, nothing like the SF scenes.
