Need advice on Chevy's new HHR

Posted on 04/24/2007 8:46:05 AM PDT by bigfootbob

I'm thinking about buying a 2007 HHR this weekend. Since FReepers have their fingers on the pulse of everything, I thought I'd ask if anyone had any negative/positive comments about this vehicle. Thanks.

I have no firsthand information either way..good or bad..but I’m curious as to how you decided on the HHR,and what others you compared it to? Also, how was the test drive?

The insight is more fuel efficient.

I rented one once and it was slow and the cockpit seemed cramped, but I'm pretty big. The window controls are on the console and not the doors, which is probably a cost saving measure so the driver and passenger can share. The back hatch lifts up, but since I am big, I had to bow down like Mr. Miagi to get my stuff our of the back.

But it looks cool and gets pretty good mpg's.

They seem to be a good buy fully loaded. The horse power and performance is not as good as the PT, but I hear the ride is much nicer. The quality must be better since it’s not a MOPAR... Can you see anything from the inside?

It’s the GM/Chevy copycat of Chryslers PT cruiser. I would check that one out as well if you haven’t already. Various other hatchbacks might also be competitive with it.

I like the look, I’m in the preliminary stage. I have owned 3 Blazers and I like Chevy’s. I’ll test drive the car next, if I hear good responses.

The second choice is a turbo Jetta sedan.

I was thinking about maybe getting one. When I sat in one at a car show, the visibility seemed to be a lot more limited than I would have expected. IIRC, the windshield seemed kinda small. And it was a bit more cramped than I would have thought, but like the previous commenter, I’m also a bit large. YMMV, of course. I’m seeing more and more of them on the road every day, and I haven’t heard any negative comments from the automotive world.

I’m 6’3” and weigh 245, so cabin space is an issue. This is why I didn’t buy a Trail Blazer, my head hit the door opening every time I entered and exited the truck.

My wife will be the primary driver of this vehicle, but I will drive the thing too. I’m concerned about the reliability.

I'm 6'1" 240. You will not like to sit in this car. The PT Cruiser is roomier.

Funny, I had a Trailblazer for about a year and got rid of it because of the space, too. I managed to make it in without getting wounded, but long trips bugged my back.

My wife is in love with the HHR and I have yet to find any good reasons to deny her one. We’re looking at a purchase in the fall.

The PT is slightly smaller in height and width than the HHR. Lengthwise the HHR is 176 inches long and the PT 168. Both have 103 inch wheelbases. Apparently according to wiki Brian Nesbitt may have designed both of them.

My absolute most hated vehicle made today because it’s such an obvious, shameless ripoff of the PT Cruiser, years after the PT’s debut. Typical GM.

Link to article on the 2006 (Unchanged for 2007 except for a small boost in Horse power the 2.2-liter engine goes from 143 to 149 horsepower and for the 2.4 from 172 to 175. ) HHR for people who know cars, Car & Driver.

http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/10526/2006-chevrolet-hhr-lt.html

excerpt

The car feels retro to the driver, too. The shifter catches as it moves through the pattern. The steering is rubbery and very sensitive to road camber; it wants to fall off the road crown. The body bobs and pitches on the suspension. When you let up the clutch in first gear, the nose bobs up. All of this creates a sense of woolly, imprecise control, the way cars used to be.

What's the hurry? That's the mood.

The tach is dinky, there for style more than info. The engine hangs on to revs when you shift, another retro gesture.

No offense but I think they look cheap, and like the PT Cruiser, Cheesy.
