Merriam-Webster

Tusday, April 24, 2005, BASTION

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

BASTION

noun
pronunciation: Bas-‘chun
etymology: [Origin: 1590–1600; < MF < It bastione, equiv. to Upper It bastí(a) bastion, orig., fortified, built (c. It bastita, ptp. of bastire to build < Gmc; see BASTE1) + -one aug. suffix ]

1. Fortification. a projecting portion of a rampart or fortification that forms an irregular pentagon attached at the base to the main work.
2. a fortified place.
3. anything seen as preserving or protecting some quality, condition, etc.: a bastion of solitude; a bastion of democracy.

bastioned, adjective

Let's all be nice with this word. I know where it can go. I'm watching. But later on this morning.

RULES: You must use the WFTD in a sentence for an A. For a + after your “A,” you must bring in a link of the word usage or something funny, a poem or some prose that will elucidate the word for us.

If you need to know how to link, come to the Subbie’s desk in the front of the class.

Perhaps the great purge was like a bastion to reduce the internecine battles and restore some peace to the Freep.

Good Morning!

Bastions are exemplars,
They make a salient point.
In the citadel of self-defense,
They're the big toes of the joint.

"Perhaps the great purge was like a bastion to reduce the internecine battles and restore some peace to the Freep."

It was like watching a French mob rioting. No matter what the purpose, it's just wrong.

How is it possible that Rosie O’Donut, that bastion of intelligence, is still on the air? Intellectually, I don’t want to appear to be a snob; it isn’t becoming. But I cannot figure out how a bi snot like O'Donnell obtains a daily forum on television. This ugly bat is on every day!

She is a well-known hard leftist, but it is not bias that I’m complaining about. I don’t even care about the fact that she is disgusting to look at, having turned her abs into a giant jelly roll. (Hey, Rosie—lay off the high-calorie Coke. Tab is on the grocer’s shelf, too.) If there is a conservative on the show, she baits, on and on, with the latest moonbat theory. Isn’t there an anti-SOB rule on ABC?

I stab no one in the back, as a rule, but Rosie deserves it. While I was studying and learning facts, she was busy imitating a bison at lunch, grazing in the fields, looking for oat bins or stacks of hay. Please, “The View” and “The Ugly View” need obits. And I mean now!

Once a bastion of support for the Toon, now black leaders seem to be slipping away. Perhaps Missus Clinton needs to work on her cadence more?

look at you using two for one! and yes, i agree, i think that was the intent. it was the pinprick [okay, maybe it was a blow-hole, actually] to release some of the pent up tension that has been building here the past few months.

She panders like her husband, but without the charm. I’m half suprised she didn’t show up to that conference dressed as Aunt Jamima....
