A classmate of mine (Marine Reservist) just got his deployment orders, he leave the first week of May.
Those of us in class with him want to load him up with a care package but we're kind of worried about over doing it. Since he is a history major like the rest of us in that class we are tempted to load him up with a bunch of historical biographies, etc. but we're afraid that a bunch of books that might come in handy during down time are going to be heavy and a pain to have to drag around, especially since he will be first going to California for training.
We figured lip balm, sun screen, DVD's, gum, hard candy, calling cards, and CD's. I'm adding a digital camera, rechargeable batteries and a charger.
Godspeed and Thanks to him.
I think the services discourage cigarettes, but I know chew is currency with many of our finest men and women. You’ve heard, of course, about Silly String and toys to give to the locals.
Baby wipes and a spray bottle. Seriously.
Where is he going to be? My husband isn’t a big reader, but loves to listen to books on CD. I send him those. I also send him magazines and the Crystal Light singles packets. He gets bored with plain water after a while. I send him the single size things of cookies, so he can share with his buddies. I send him printouts of articles and such about his favorite teams, because most of the good sites are blocked. I make him CDs of new songs because he doesn’t really get to hear them. He brought a portable DVD player, so I send him movies.
When I ask where he is going to be, I didn’t mean specifically. More like will he be doing a lot of walking, or will he be on a float, or will he be on a base. Hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable.
He's a neat kid, the average age in the class is 30 and he's 20 and gets the highest grades in the class, he wrecks the curve on every test. We all knew he was a Marine and he came in last week and was asking us what you're supposed to do if you can't finish the class. We asked why and that's how we found out he was going. After class the instructor took him to her office to arrange for him to take the final before he leaves and that's when we decided to do something for him.
