It is with pleasure and certainly a large amount of relief that I come to you with an announcement of immense importance to many in this community.

We have a race team with Tux at the wheel.

Tom Chastain, a legend in the Indianapolis Racing Realm and the owner of Chastain Motorsports has announced his team's entrance in this year's Indy 500. And if we've got anything to do with it...as long as I have one struggling breathe left inside of me, that monster of a race car will have Linux splashed all over it when the flag drops. It will be the first time in history that Linux has been an active participant of the now-famous cry.

"Gentlemen, Start your engines"!

The article closes with an impressive explanation of Linux and why it is sponsoring a car in the Indianapolis 500. You will want to go see for yourself. If this is the first you have heard of it, please visit our revamped website for this event. http://www.tux500.com.

The final paragraph of the article has the mention of this community and our efforts. It is published here for your convenience.. The entire announcement with photos of Stephan Gregoire, our driver can be found at:

A full article on new entries and general news about Indy this year can be found at:

http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=248407&FS=IRL

"Sponsorship for the effort is being generated through an innovative program for the promotion of the Linux computer operating system. The massive community of individuals who have collectively developed Linux is being mobilized to promote Linux using the visibility of the world's most famous race as the communication platform. The cherubic penguin mascot of Linux, affectionately known as Tux, will be featured on the car. The Linux community leader on the project, Bob Moore, in conjunction with Lobby4Linux.com and Acceleration Marketing have established a web site on this unique sponsorship program at www.Tux500.com."

Of course, it is you that is going to make this happen. Donations toward this huge effort can be made at http://www.Tux500.com

All Righty Then

TOPICS: Computers/Internet; Sports
KEYWORDS: indy500; linux; opensource
I thought this was funny but dont plan on donating anything myself, FreeRepublic should be a higher priority and my Churches Missions are even higher than that. Still it seems like a fun idea.

It will be the first time in history that Linux has been an active participant of the now-famous cry. "Gentlemen, Start your engines"!

Seems they're getting way ahead of themselves, from the actual source they need $350,000 and so far have less than $5,000. Wonder if there will be a refund if/when they don't make it?

According to their site:

# $25K - $50K USD : Minor Associate Sponsorship; logo appears on the car
# $50K - $100K USD : Associate Sponsorship; larger logo appears on the car
# $125K - $300K USD : Major Associate Sponsorship; large logo appears on the car's engine cover
# $350K - $600K USD : Primary Sponsorship; logo appears on the car's sidepod, and the race team name contain "Team Linux"

While I seriously doubt they will get anywhere near 350K they probably will get to 25K and thus they will have "been an active participant of the now-famous cry. "Gentlemen, Start your engines"!" Like I said, funny little two second fact with not a whole lot or real world implication.
