I think Apple really lucked out with the iPod because its popularity really started to rise when USB 2.0-capable computers became widely available from 2001 on. That made it possible to copy large amounts of media files to the iPod quickly without having to install a IEEE-1394 port, and because USB 2.0 supported both Macs and PC’s, it meant the iPod using the USB 2.0 interface could pretty much tap into the entire personal computer market.
