How do I find a vet's record of service?

How would I go about finding a relative's record of service in the Marines? If anyone could help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ask John Kerry. He knows how.

Is this relative deceased?

What's your interest in it?

Ask John Kerry. He knows how.

He has yet to prove he does....

Guess I should be less cryptic: I’m looking for my Dad’s record. He served in Korea, circa ‘51 to ‘53. He is deceased. I have one of his dogtags.

The records are private, unless you can show that the vet is dead and you are the next of kin, or you have written permission (a signed form 180) from the vet.

Record will be too recent for NARA...you may have to send to NPRC (Dept of Army records) in St. Louis.

http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/standard-form-180.html

NARA is great if you are looking for WWI veterans (Ancestry.com has index - all males were required to be registered) or before, such as Civil War or Revolutionary period.

You will most likely have to start with a “DD-214” or “separation papers”.

What, in particular, are you trying to discover...???

If you have his “dog tag”, you have his SERVICE NUMBER...right...???

Unfortunately, unless he was “in the system” after the ‘70’s that ‘service number’ is most likely NOT cross-referenced with his SS Number.

PM me if necessary.

“unless you can show that the vet is dead and you are the next of kin, or you have written permission (a signed form 180) from the vet.”

might be a BIT “tricky” to get that 180 signed if the guy’s dead...???
