FREEPERS!!! WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO US??
April 5, 2007 | Self

Posted on 04/05/2007 8:46:45 PM PDT by Pistolshot

I came here in 1998 looking for conservative, logical, thoughtful conversation and debate on the things that matter to us the most. I was a Reagan Republican. One of those who had watched in horror as our embassy staff in Tehran was taken by fanatics. The answer should have been overwhelming force, but it was Carter, that limp-wristed, can’t-we-just talk-this-out, weakling who had made the military a shambles, and stripped it of its soul because of VietNam. I knew from the beginning that there was no room in this world for weakness and that was the beginning of my road to conservatism.

Now here we are, in the beginnings of a campaign to deny the Democrats not only the White House, but the two houses of Congress. It is extremely early in this race, the leading candidates that have announced are far from acceptable to a large majority of us. Yet, day after day on this site we have the Rudy machine, the McCain people, Mitt’s people, and every other supported candidate backer posting missives about their guy. Some are repeated vitriol that has no debatable content, and only begs to be ignored. Some of it is the adage of ‘Don’t like it, too bad. He will be our candidate.’ In the past I’ve seen posters here who were thoughtful, logical, literally passionate about impeaching Clinton, but with a HUGE degree of civility.

What is taking place here, and I am guilty of it too, so don’t think I am pointing fingers here, is the destruction of what is good about this site. WE ARE CONSERVATIVES, first and foremost. We have our passions that lead us to the candidates we have running. Debate is the give and take of ideas to reach a consensus about a direction. A direction we should all look at for the country, not because of the ‘he can beat Hillary’ dogma, but because the candidate we choose is THE one to carry what our hopes and dreams are for this great nation. I have seen posters here demean others, insult integrities, bash people they DON’T EVEN KNOW ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, and generally look like some of the slime that lurks on DU.

We are supposed to be better than that. It’s time we stop acting like we cannot debate without insult, stop treating each other as if our opinions don’t matter or our vote. It’s time that Jim starts looking around and suspending or closing some accounts for this type of behavior until it gets under control.

We are not DU here. The candidate we vote to carry the platform will be the one who reaches out to the most diverse among us. If that doesn’t happen for your candidate, I’m sorry. But to stoop to some of the tactics I’ve seen here based on a persons opinion or religion is despicable and speaks poorly for all of us.

I don’t believe he said that there was no difference between him and Hillary. Find a direct quote.

It was already quoted somewhere on this thread and has been posted dozens of times in the last few months.

I said the subject of the thread was about us being civil with each other.

I think all of us would like to keep democrats out of the Whitehouse, we just have different ideas on how that might come about. I can get passionate about and sometimes even make stupid jokes about candidates that I like or dislike - but I don't think it helps anyone's cause to sling personal attacks at each other. I think that turns a lot of people off.

There’s not going to be a landslide defeat in 2008 if a true conservative is nominated. True conservatives always win. Only moderates and liberals suffer landslide defeats. Just ask Barry Goldwater. /s

I would vote for a 20% R over a 0% D because I’m better off 20% of the time and the other 80% it does not matter.

And as long as there are Republicans that vote like you, we will have 20% conservatives.

Bull.

Fact is you can’t back it up. Rudy never said that there was no difference between himself and Hillary. That’s the truth. If you can’t handle the truth that is not my problem.

That card clearly states it was Bill Clinton, not Hillary. It also said MOST, and it’s from 1996.

As I suspected, you statement was false.

I give you credit for honestly posting evidence of your error.

Ronald Reagan signed an abortion bill into law in California. Had he vetoed the bill it might not have become law. Does that mean you believe he has to answer for all of the abortions in CA before Roe v. Wade made state law irrelevent?

I suspect he might have to explain his reasonings for signing the bill in the first place.

Good points. Abortion is a tough issue for Republicans. Politically, there are advantages to being against Roe v. Wade (pro-life) and there are advantages to wanting to uphold Roe v. Wade (pro-choice.) The electoral map for a Rudy victory could be quite different from the map for a Thompson or a Romney victory. Rudy might be able to win Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire while losing one state that Bush one. Romney or Thompson could win all the states Bush won with a pro-life position.

The key point a lot of staunch pro-lifers miss is that overturning Roe v. Wade would probably lead to a group of states where abortion is legal and a group of states where abortion is illegal in all cases. That would probably not reduce the total number of abortions significantly, but only change the location in which abortions occur. At the same time, illegal abortion activity would inevitably start up in the states where abortion is illegal, which would tend to harm the scared teenagers and poor women. So people need to keep in mind that we cannot roll the country back to where America was before the fateful Roe v. Wade decision. We have to deal with the consequences of overturning Roe as the country is today.

It's a very tough, complex issue and extremists on both sides oversimplify it constantly. There are good arguments both for and against overturning Roe v. Wade. Fortunately, it's not my decision to make.

You're right about that. It's kind of nitpicking semantics but you're right. I think that gives you a great slogan though...

Vote Rudy! He's more like Bill Clinton than Hillary Clinton.

And as long as there are voters like you, we will lose Senate seats to the likes of Sherrod Brown.

I’m sure the Senate vote last week was a great source of anxiety to our troops. Had DeWine been re-elected, Cheney would have broken the tie.

Making decisions that weaken a position instead of strengthening a position is not good strategery. Harry Reid is very grateful to you.

-—If you want to wander in the political wilderness for another 40 years, be my guest.-—

When the Whigs split over slavery, many just walked away from the Party. One of them was Lincoln, who did not seek reelection. He left politics and went back to private life until a less conflicted Party provided a vehicle for his principles.

Howlin’s comments, at least the ones I’ve read, are not that nasty or personal. She’s just a tough Southern lady and you have to expect some of that stuff out of North Carolina.

In 1996 Clinton signed the Republican Welfare Reform Bill into law. Don’t expect a repeat performance from Comrade Hillary.
