(New Haven-AP) _ New Haven police have arrested three Yale University students and charged them with burning an American flag hanging from the porch of a Chapel Street home.
The three are facing charges ranging from reckless endangerment to arson. Police identified the three as 23-year-old Said Hyder Akbar, 19-year-old Nikolaos Angelopoulos and 19-year-old Farhad Anklesaria.
They were held in jail early yesterday and later arraigned in New Haven Superior Court. Bond was set at $25,000 for two of the suspects and $15,000 for the third.
Anklesaria and Angelopoulos are foreign students while Akbar was born in Pakistan, but is a U.S. citizen.
Police say the three set fire to a flag mounted on a pole to the house. It was spotted by two police officers on patrol. One officer pulled down the burning flag to prevent the fire from spreading and the other tracked down the three men.
Police say while the three students admitted setting the flag on fire, there is no reason listed in the police report.
Said, Nikolaos, Farhad, three Yale University students. 3 stooges. (apologies to Larry, Moe and Curley)
Is burning logs in your fireplace free speech?
The above is a very poor comparison to “Flag Burning.”
Send them to our Cuban prison and let them think it over for several years, then deport them.
That’s Mennonites. My wife and I were both raised Mennonite.
We like to say we were Mennonites until we became Christians.
I doubt that they would burn the flag.
I agree...you're right.
Still, my point remains:
My flag. My property. Nobody is being physically harmed by my actions. The government is not allowed to tell me what I may do with my belongings on my property.
Just for fun, could we pass laws requiring flags to be recycled? In many areas you can’t burn leaves; you have to bag them. Why not pass a similar law on flags? Why can’t my burning of leaves be a First Amendment issue showing my disgust for Al Gore and his ilk?
Ah, sweet youth....send ‘em home and let them see just glorious life really is, especially when our Marines or Army and Air Force personnael are hunting them down like the dogs they are. Maybe, if they are lucky, missles from our Navy guys will find their new home away from home. Just desserts for a couple of creeps! Burn my flag and I’ll bury your sorry ass as deep as possible, preferably in Hell.
They were arrested because the flag was still attached to the pole of someone's house...
..but if they'd taken the flag off the pole and stomped & burned it on the sidewalk, no problem...no arrest ~sarcasm
Actually, that's a good thing. Do you remember those pictures of the militants torching an American flag, with the caption reading "this thing is worth this much, and that thing is worth that much...", and then you come to the third picture, and the Towel-Head catches himself on fire, and the caption reads: "Priceless"? Well, it's the same thing here. If these guys had just gone out and bought a flag, and burned it, they couldn't be touched. But since they burned it while it was still attached to the house, they have opened themselves up to arson charges. Priceless.
good point !
well said!
Sounds good to me. I’m sick of this crap.
Nikolaos Angelopoulos? Send him home—they’ll probably do worse to him than we could even imagine.
Connecticut ping!
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
I did not mean to insult Mennonites, should have included /s.
Poor attempt at derision directed at MSM.
No insult taken, I was just pointing out that there are two n’s in Mennonite.
