How do I get on this list? Do I have to submit a sample chapter or something? Is the list genre specific? Are there any writers of gay, historical romance novels on the list?
Ok ignore the last one, but the first three stand.

Since in this case open forum means FR, which has moderators, and not too many DU trolls, I am in favor of open forum. That way we can all benefit from the distilled wisdom of the comments.
Cheers!

I’m sorry, but I feel that critiquing postings on FR will be the death knell of FR.
IMHO, FR is for the exchange of conservative ideas, NOT trying to prove how smart the author of the posting appears.
Personally, I would hesitate to post anything that is even slightly controversial, if it is going to be critiqued.
There has to be a better forum for this kind of activity.
While I’m ranting, another thing... I see posting for assistance in the treatment of medical problems (diabetes, tonight), computer repair, dog training, religion, and endless other subjects.. I want to tell the poster that I’m going on a diabetes (computer, religious, dog) forum and asking for political advise.
FR has lost its focus during the last year, with the opening of blogging as a category. Personally, I’d like it to get back to the posting of political articles, and the discussion of the same.

Forgot to add:
If you are going to critique via Freepmail, that is downright rude. It is simply talking behind somebodies back.

Ping JamesP81 and you are on the list. There are some very talented writers participating on the main thread (I will ping you to it) and we are having some interesting dicussions.
The list is fiction writing - all types.
Welcome aboard!

Bob,
I think you misunderstand. We are not talking about critiquing postings.... but chapters from novels.
If you feel your "novel" is controversial, then it is up to you to decide it you want it critiqued.
Re: Rant - balanced against all the threads you listed are hundreds of political threads so I think FR is not going to turn from its orignial purpose.
The maturity level I see in the writer's threads, the excellent talent, and the willingness to help others in the desire to be writers lends not to "bite-backing" but to honest and useful help.
I know they have helped me immensely by their willingness to honestly share their time and knowledge with me.

Chapters may be too long to be contained in just a post. I, for one, would not mind having chapters emailed to me. That way, I can print them out and give an honest assessment.
That is my 2 cents worth.

How do I get on this list?
Ask.
Do I have to submit a sample chapter or something?
Not, but I'd ask that if you submit work for review, that you also help review work submitted by others.
Is the list genre specific?
Nope.

“I think you misunderstand. We are not talking about critiquing postings.... but chapters from novels.”
What earthly reason do you have critiquing fiction novels on FR??
It seems to me that you want to be on FR because of the population mix, hoping that some sales might come out of a FR posting.
There are plenty of free or low cost web sites you can move your “critiquing” to, without using up FR bandwidth.

Granted, I'd prefer not to do FR mail just because it's somewhat difficult to make sure everyone sees the critique.

Which are full of libs, trolls, and folks who will give a bad review of your work not for its merit as a writing piece, but for the fact that it doesn't tow the lib / commie line.

Bob,
I am not going to get in a fight about this. Obviously you disagree with what we are doing. Your disagreement has been noted.
Hopefully, you will find another thread more to your liking to post to.

Just a thought...it might be cumbersome to have chapters posted on threads.
You might consider setting up something like a Yahoo group that would allow members to access your files. That way they aren’t public on the thread and you can remove them to edit or when the editing is done.
