Excrement pile saves Chinese woman after balcony fall
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | April 4, 2007

A Chinese woman survived a fall from a sixth-floor balcony after she landed on a large pile of excrement dug up by workers clearing a septic tank, state media said.

The unnamed woman was stretching to hang washing when she lost her balance and fell from the balcony at her home in the southern city of Nanjing yesterday, the semi-official China News Service quoted a local newspaper as saying.

The woman suffered only minor injuries after the 20cm heap cushioned her fall, the agency said.

Workers had been dredging the tank after complaints by local residents, it said.

It was probably 20 meters. You know how confusing the metric system is to American reporters, who aren't that bright to begin with. It's not likely that her fall was broken by 1 1/2 inches of poo.

7.87402 inches of poo to be exact. :)

oops, make that 11 1/2 inches, I’m not that bright either.

Still, the point is that 11 1/2 inches wouldn’t make much of a heap of crap to cushion the impact of someone falling from 6 floors up.

A factory I worked in had a secretary who struggled unsuccessfully with the metric system. I reported an small cut (1.5 centimeters) on my thumb one day. An hour or so later the boss came out of his office laughing and asked me if I was OK and showed me the accident report. The secretary had written it as a 20cm cut across the tip of my thumb.

Must be a relative. No matter what I do, I always land in a big pile of it.

"You’re still off..." That's because in my haste, I was thinking of MM's instead of CM's, and I was just roughing that as well. Had I given it a bit more thought, I would have figured 13 mm is about 1/2 inch, (think wrenches) so 20 would be about 1 inch, multiply that by 10 and I would have been closer.

I was too hasty to point out that a small pile of crap like that would not hove broken her fall, and mixed up my MM's with CM's. So, see? I'm just like every other American stuck on standard measures.

"It was probably 20 meters."

20 meters is like 80 feet. That pile of crap would have been about three floors above her 6th floor balcony.
