OTTAWA, March 27 (UPI) -- An Ottawa woman trying to trick her terrier into trying a new kind of food ate it herself and developed symptoms, including foaming at the mouth, of illness. The stunt-gone-wrong began earlier in the month before a North American recall of moist pet foods was issued, but Elaine Larabie suspects she and her new 1-year-old pet, Missy fell victim to tainted food, the Ottawa Citizen reported Tuesday.
She said once her dog started eating the food, she stopped, but both fell ill, and for three days she experienced foaming at the mouth, problems urinating, vomiting and loss of appetite.
The dog required veterinary care but will recover. Larabie is awaiting lab results from her hospitalization, the newspaper said.
Larabie said when she contacted Iams, the company confirmed the food she and the dog ate was affected by the recall and likely was contaminated with rodent-killing chemical sprayed on Chinese wheat. She said the company assured her they will cover her medical bills and she hasn't decided yet whether to sue, the Citizen said.

Rule in my house: if Jake (our dog) is hungry, he will eat his dog chow. If don't eat it, he ain't hungry. Jake will always eat bacon, hungry or not.

They'll have to put her down. It's too late when they start foaming at the mouth. Sorry.

Canada doesn't have the same out-of-control tort law problem as the U.S. so there likely aren't going to be anything like the big bucks going to any of the would-be litigants in this matter that there'll probably be Stateside.
Under Canadian law, even those who've - sadly - lost pets, most likely won't get much beyond reimbursement of their related Vet bills & some portion of their litigation expense because all animals are simply deemed to be mere possessions.
(e.g. no 'pain & suffering' payouts after thefts, etc. of any sort of 'personal property')
As for the woman above, the most likely outcome is a Judicial lecture on stupidity and definitely no major cash windfall.

I understand that, but even under the more expansive American standard, this woman suffered injury (if proved). To suggest that she shouldn't have her day in court isn't very wise. The fact that we have an out-of-control tort system and unscrupulous personal injury attorneys is a side-issue. And the fact that she used this product in this fashion is simply irrelevant.

My husband tells me he heard that what was making the pets sick was some kind of rat poison in the pet food. Anyone else hear or know anything about that?
That being said, my reaction to having pet food in my mouth would be about the same. The only difference is that I wouldn't have put it there voluntarily.

You feed your kids dog food? Um, no I dont. I was talking about the trick of pretending to eat your kids food in order to get them to eat it. Didnt realize my post was that hard to follow.

This woman's mind has gone to the dogs.
Sheesh! Thanks for the ping.

I didn't say she shouldn't have her day in Court but, merely offered my opinion as to how it will likely go.
As for your claim "she used the product in this fashion is simply irrelevant", surely there's a line somewhere or folks would be getting rich after thinking pineapples might make perfectly acceptable suppositories?
I contrasted - I believe accurately - the overall general difference in grounds for & awards resulting from suits for damages here & Stateside primarily for the benefit of American FRiends less knowledgeable than yourself as to sometimes subtle and/or unexpected differences between our countries .
BTW & unrelated, you may want save this
money-grubbing gem I happened to stumble across the other day with respect to moonbat Mel Hurtig for the next time someone takes him seriously and/or attempts to portray him as someone American patriots should rightly be listening to.

Welllll... I probably shouldn't say this, but I tried it.
The stuff is really very good over egg noodles with some sour cream and grated cheese mixed in. Bake at 325 for 30-35 minutes. Add butter to taste.
