Hi everybody! Just a quick note to say I'm all landed and settled in. It's just so ordinary these days for me to travel between the US and Asia. I feel as much like I drove to the corner store for a bottle of milk as I flew around the world! I'll also be going to Bangkok for a quick trip for visa reasons.
It's amazing how attitudes and feelings change from place to place and from time to time. Ethnic Taiwanese have been very defensive about their first ethnically Taiwanese president (who didn't have such a great administration), so I thought being in their capital area (where I am now) would be kind of tense.
In fact, it's the opposite. Something about being in the absolute majority makes people relax quite a bit. Around here everyone walks around speaking Taiwanese (which is really the Fukien dialect from Fukien Provence in China) but they also speak Mandarin, and will occasionally switch to English, but I prefer to speak Chinese, after all I came such a long way I should be able to practice it!
Other than that things appear largely just how I left them, though all the people around here are much nicer than those others I was around. Maybe it's the ethnic makeup, that other area had three distinct groups who weren't 100% in love with each other, and lived in close proximity.
But down here there's only 1 group and it is 100% in love with itself! Which makes for a much more enjoyable environment.
Well, gotta run, I'll just drop in every few days or so for updates until I get a home computer, but I'm not in any rush to do that.
Cheers, and see you around some country or other!
