Suspected Dismemberment of Texas A&M Student [caution, disturbing]

The Harris County Sheriff's Office reversed course Friday, agreeing to move forward with a landfill excavation to find the body of Tynesha Stewart, even as investigators acknowledged Friday "there is a good possibility" her suspected killer may have dismembered her body and placed her in several garbage bins.

Homicide detectives also revealed more details about Timothy Wayne Shepherd's actions following the slaying, including the mysterious discovery of burnt meat at his apartment and a neighbor's report of smoke billowing from his patio the day after Stewart's disappearance.

But it is not unknown in a multi-cultural area like Harris County, Texas, to run across people who have different practices.

TYNESHA STEWART DISAPPEARANCE

Authorities call off search for A&M student's body

BILLY SMITH II: CHRONICLE

Harris County Sheriff' Tommy Thomas announced Saturday night there will be no search for the body of Tynesha Stewart, the 19-year-old Texas A&M student who was murdered March 15.

``There are no remaining body parts,'' Thomas said at a press conference. ``We have determined through this investigation that the defendant dismembered the victim and burned her body parts. There is no body to be found. Based on that information, there will be no search. The family is aware of this and they understand.''

Thomas, who called on local media to give the Stewart family privacy, said Timothy Wayne Shepherd burned Stewart's body in a barbecue grill on his patio at his apartment in the 17700 block of Red Oak in northwest Harris County.

When investigators examined Shepherd's apartment, the bathroom had been scoured almost completely clean with ammonia. The only evidence found were two specks of blood, detectives said.

Stewart was last seen March 15, and was reported missing March 19. The next day the Harris County Sheriff's Office homicide division launched its investigation.

Shepherd was interviewed for 10 hours on Wednesday, March 21. After being released, he contacted community activist Quanell X, who persuaded Shepherd to tell him what happened to Stewart. He then led authorities to the garbage bin where he claimed to have placed Stewart's body.

That same day, Shepherd was charged with murder and early the following morning, investigators say, he confessed to strangling Stewart. On Thursday, the sheriff's office announced it would not conduct a search in a landfill for Stewart's body, but seemed to reverse itself on Friday when it said it would do one.

Later on Friday, investigators said Shepherd may have dismembered her body. And on Saturday, the sheriff announced there would be no search, because all the parts had been burned.

Shepherd's neighbors said Saturday that last week he was barbecuing at all hours of the day, for days at a time, at his apartment, No. 224.

James Hebert, 18, often played video games and barbecued with his ``nice'' next-door neighbor. In fact, they cooked out together so frequently Hebert kept his grill at Shepherd's place.

But starting on March 15 , he noticed Shepherd was cooking - on his own grill and on Hebert's pit - ``non-stop`` for two days.

This time, however, Shepherd hadn't invited him over, nor did he share. When he asked for some of what he was cooking, Shepherd refused, saying he was cooking for a wedding.

On March 16 around 7:45 p.m., Hebert and his roommate, Cithara Gomez, became alarmed when they looked over and saw dark-colored smoke billowing from Shepherd's patio.

Concerned the building might be on fire, they called 9-1-1.

When a firefighter and Harris County deputy arrived at the apartment, Shepherd quickly told them he had everything under control.

``He (Shepherd) came to the door real quick,'' said Hebert, who saw Stewart at Shepherd's apartment the day before she was killed. ``His face was real sweaty.''

Hebert, who gave a statement to homicide detectives Saturday, said that over the weekend, he noticed his grill, and Shepherd's smoker, had disappeared from Shepherd's patio.

Dionne Whitaker, 31, whose patio is directly across from Shepherd's patio, said Saturday she saw Shepherd carry the grill and the smoker to the garbage bin on March 17 or March 18.

Whitaker said she assumed Shepherd was throwing them away because he ``burnt them up'' when whatever he was cooking late last week started ``blazing,'' with fire nearly reaching the roof of his patio, she said.

Whitaker, who was interviewed by investigators, said Saturday that when she learned Shepherd may have been burning body parts, she was deeply disturbed.

``I wanted to vomit,'' she said.

Whitaker's husband, Louis Evans, who also gave a statement to detectives, was alarmed the first time he saw the pit ablaze. But when it happened a few more times, he became suspicious.

``At first I thought he was careless,'' Evan said. ``You'd be careless once. But you wouldn't do it again. He could have set the building on fire. There is other people's property ... I didn't know what was going on.''

The sheriff said the five-day investigation of the murder, followed by days of blistering criticism of the department for its initial decision not to conduct a search in a landfill for Stewart's body, was ``one of the toughest things I've ever been through.''

Tim Miller, the director of Texas Equusearch, which had hoped to begin assisting in a search of an Atoscocita-area landfill next week, said he was deeply saddened they would not be able to return Stewart's body to her family.

``We did everything we could,'' he said. ``It just wasn't meant to be.''

That was pretty strange how we spent all that money and effort trying to recover John's and the two women's bodies, only to have Uncle Teddy do a hasty "burial at sea" after they were recovered.

---

Friends and family told reporters that Stewart and Shepherd met while working together at a Pizza Hut when they were in the 11th grade and dated until last fall, when Shepherd got back together with the mother of his daughter. A friend, Kendria Smith, called Stewart "overprotective" and said Stewart thought Shepherd was following her a few days before she disappeared. "I could tell she was frightened, but I didn't realize the severity of it," Smith said.

---

Friends said her relationship with her ex-boyfriend was a constant battle, and that they were witness to the volatile situation.

"She tried to end it but he kept calling her, and calling her, and calling her," said Stewart's dorm suitemate, Megan Wallace.

---

Though Stewart was on campus only a short time, those who knew the freshman said she made a huge impact on so many lives.

"She was a lot of fun to be around, and was loved by everyone she came in contact with," said Steichen.

"Her smile and her laugh, and she would always sing in the shower, it was so cute," said Wallace.

Friends say the dorm Stewart once lit up is now a much quieter place.

"It's just empty now, and it's really hard," said Wallace.

---

A 16- or 17-year-old dating a 25-year-old is not a good thing. Neither is a 16- or 17- or 19-year-old dating anybody who has the potential of "getting back together with the mother of his daughter."

Of course, you never think it'll end like this.

Dude, you can keep the grill. I'll get a new one.

"Brings to mind John Wayne Gacy and John Wayne Bobbit."

A REALLY industrious person by the name of Chuck Shepherd also noticed that the middle name of Wayne is often associated with murder. He even compiled a list.

Though the names are listed the individual crimes are not.

Unless the suspect eats the evidence, as he seems to have done.

Victim and Perp were black. The local race baiters were saying that the remains were not being searched for because she was black, and that law enforcement would be putting more effort into it if the victim was white. The white power structure initially caved under pressure, but it looks like the search has now been cancelled.

That's crazy. One of Greta's favorite victims, I don't remember which one, was presumed buried in a landfill, and it was stated at the time that it would be next to impossible to find the body, and a waste of time to even try. She was white.

The one I can think off was the good mormon fellow who shot his wife and tossed her in the garbage when his various lies started catching up with him. They spent several weeks trolling through garbage looking for her.

I remembered his name was something like 'hacker' or 'slasher'. Googled. It was "Hacking". They found the body in that case. Of course, he didn't do like the Houston fellow and cook her before disposing of her.

And exactly what do they expect authorities to find? Carbon?

Waste of time and resources, unless they need a piece for a conviction.

You didn't hear the relatives of the victims (mostly druggies and/or hookers) of Robert Pickton screaming to find the all of the remains of the remains. But that was in Canada.

20 years ago an aunt of my ex-husbands was thawing a bathtub full of chicken in her home. This was what we were going to eat at the family reunion the next day. Luckily they were all still packaged. Strange sight to be sure.

Have you ever been to a chicken processing plant??? Your aunt's bathtub is probably pristeen compared to where those chickens came from, in the package.

Well, in defense of Mr. X and his buddies (Yes, that really is his name), they apparently didn't know that she had been cooked when they made the demands. The defendant first said he had put her in one dumpster, then that he had cut her up and put her in several, the latest story involves the burning.

I've certainly heard of thawing fowl in the bathtub. My family has done it and I've done it myself. A huge frozen turkey is awkward to place in running water in the kitchen sink. It may not be for everybody but hardly in the "never heard of" category. This guy must be easily shocked if this is a head scratcher for him.
