I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.

You want an animal that will defend your family to the death but is as gentle as a lamb:

Please don't respond about the very few sick or abused ones. I've heard all that crap.

They are almost all sweet, and I love 'em.
People who don't like dogs simply don't understand what they are missing. They are truly a blessing.

I know of two people -- one a neighbor and one a really dumb relation -- that had pits attack their kids unprovoked. Luckily, both survived without too much trauma, but the pits were put down.
Why, indeed, would you put a child at risk? With most of these dogs it's the same story -- breaking free from chains in the yard, where they spend most of their time. That's humane?
We were thinking of adopting a dog recently, and looked at the dogs being offered for adoption on line by the local humane society. Well over 50% were pure pit or mixed pit blood. Why are these animals being kept alive? Would you trust the word of whoever gave them up (this humane society doesn't take strays) to tell you the truth about them?
And yes, I've read the arguments: they're not bad animals, they just have bad owners, or have been bred badly. The fact is, other than a highly skilled dog handler that has complete control of a trained pit at all times, no one should own one. In the wrong hands, they are all potential killers.

True story -- happened today.
There is a home FOR LEASE across the street from us. We had noticed a family of 3 moving "things" into the empty house during the past week, but no one has moved in officially.
TODAY, we noticed that the realtor was on the property, and we inquired if the house had been leased.
The realtor said that the owner, realtor, and new tenents had met yesterday to sign the lease. And ONLY at that time, did the new tenents advise the owner that they owned a pit bull. Thank God, the house-owner and the realtor called off the deal immediately.
We thanked the realtor again and again, for protecting our neighbor from having to content with a pit bull. Our quiet neighborhood has many people who walk their pets on leases, and there are little children playing outdoors all the time.
The property owner and realtor had the COURAGE to take a STAND against renting to pit-bull owners. We are truly blessed.

I have come across many sweet pitbulls.
----------------------------------
Have you ever heard the owner of a killer pit bull say anything else about the cute little critter? "He was so good with kids." "He never did anything like this before". "We didn't train him to fight"....
My own unshakable attitude about these dogs is that you can never, repeat never, predict which one will suddenly revert to instinct and that is enough for me to keep everybody I love as far from them as possible.
