Riding on the overwhelming success of our DC rally of March 17th, wouldn't it be great to have a combined rally on Memorial Day weekend? It would be a respectful tribute to our brave military personnel that gave their lives to ensure our freedom. It would also show our active duty troops that we are in the midst of turning this country's negative opinions around and working hard to ensure a patriotic revival in our great Republic! A topic has been posted on GOE forum index asking for your input and suggestions.

You will have plenty of help in DC Memorial Day Weekend.

Rolling Thunder will hit and this is the 20th Anniversary and possibly up to 500,000 bikes in DC.

I've been going to the Wall every Memorial Weekend for Rolling Thunder for the last 14 years. I'm on my 13th Memorial Weekend Pig Roast at the house and a lot of my Vet friends come in for the weekend. We've done the Ride to the Wall from the Pentagon several times but always do the Yellow Ribbon Ride out of Ft Washington Harley. Nothing like a few hundred thousand Harley's in DC. It's quote a sight. Last year and this year's Memorial Day Pig Roast is dedicated to my daughter, PVT US Army currently serving in Korea. I'll be there... for as long as I can every year.

Rolling Thunder has their own message about VA Benefits and POW/MIA issues. I worry about diluting it. Besides, we do Memorial Day at home in our sleepy little town like its the biggest day of the year. Can't miss that.

First must come the reason to Gather again, then will come the time, place and details.

Now its a different story if the folks at Rolling Thunder want to make this year's ride something different than normal, then this would be different. What about this event would break through the ignoring eye.

I wrote the following to post today and then saw your post. My suggestion is to have as the purpose of the rally to support those members of Congress who support our achieving victory in Iraq.

Gathering of Eagles 1 was an inspiring event, one that allowed us to show the kind of support for the troops in Iraq that Vietnam veterans rarely received when they were fighting for their country.

Demonstrating support for our troops is only the first step - now we must support our military’s ability to obtain the victory we know they can achieve. Otherwise, their sacrifices will have been in vain, much like what happened in Vietnam.

As we know, we did achieve victory in Vietnam, but this was snatched away from America by politicians, resulting in tremendous loss of life. Many in the Senate and Congress are trying to repeat this scenario by threatening funding for the war or trying to set a certain date for the pull-out of our troops. If we do not achieve a stable Iraq, it is likely that this will lead to a situation even more destructive than what occurred after the Vietnam war.

For that reason, I would propose that we have a rally in Washington to support those Senators and Congressman who understand the importance of our success in Iraq, and who want to see us through to achieving victory. We are depending on these leaders to fight for us in the halls of Congress so that, as we are winning the battle on the ground in Iraq, that victory is not taken away.

A great time for the rally would be on Memorial Day or that weekend. However, if that is felt to be too far off, then it could occur sooner. It would be my suggestion that the great organizers of Gathering of Eagles 1 start the process going for Gathering of Eagles II to specifically support those leaders who are working toward a lasting victory for our troops today.
