June 1957 – Residents of Tulsa, Oklahoma are enjoying their city’s anniversary, called “Tulsarama!” Most every city around the country enjoys parties; it’s a big tradition throughout the United States.
Tulsa representatives decided they needed something unique and different in order to compete with Oklahoma City. They decided to entomb an automobile in a time capsule, using a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere as the car of choice.

I don't think 50 years is enough for a time capsule. It should be a minimum of 100 or 200 years. 50 years is nothing, people commonly have crap for 50 years in their house.

I bet that case of beer in the trunk and the gas fumes mixed nicely over 50 years. Not to mention, the whole car is now saturated with gasoline fumes. Show me a 1950s gas can that's air tight.

You want a time capsule full of 1950's cars all you gotta do is look at Cuba. Many a car restorer longs for the day that democracy come to Cuba so they can get their hands some potential beauties there.

$100 with 5% interest, compounded monthly for fifty years would have grown to $1211.94. At 10% interest you'd have $14,536.99. According to the inflation calculator at http://www.westegg.com/inflation/ an item costing $100 in 1957 would cost $716.53 in 2006.

My first car was a red '58 Olds 88 convertible. $250.00.I also remember that the cars back then had much wider seats, where you could easily lay down ad get some shut-eye if needed.
It was also handy in other ways and I sometimes think that the narrow seats in today's cars have something to do with the decline in population of some areas, especially in the midwest (Iowa) where I grew up.

LOL. I drove one to deliver DRUGS in 1957 (for a pharmacy!!!),
It had that goofy transmission button panel to the left of the steering wheel. If you revved it up and pushed "D," you could get some serious rubber.
It belonged to the pharmacy...
