The single-most prescribed drug nationwide is the painkiller hydrocodone, with more than 100 million prescriptions in 2005.

I had arthroscopic surgery on my knee last year, and the surgeon prescribed hydrocodone for me. I tried taking it the first day because of the pain, but it made me so sick I threw it out! Evidently it's a common prescription these days.

It looks as though they may be about to tighten up on that.

I went to what was a new HMO for what I thought was corporal tunnel syndrome (wrist). My first and only time visiting this doctor. Did not go into any detail with him about anything other than the pain and discomfort I was experiencing with my wrist. The first thing out of his mouth was recommending Valium for what he obviously diagnosed (depression)just by glancing at me.

He whipped out the Valium pamphlets and requested that I read over them.

I looked at that man like he was crazy and thought to myself that he must think that I was crazy.

I barely take advil. But that was a lesson to me of how easily some doctors get people hooked and dependent on drugs unnecessarily.

"...and the surgeon prescribed hydrocodone for me."

My doctor gave it to me for back pain over a year ago. I had the prescription filled, which was for 90 tabs. I took one, got nauseated and so fuzzy in the head, I didn't take another one. However, I had a root canal done in two stages last month....a week apart. The dentist gave me hydrocodone for the pain. I made sure I ate first, then took 1/2 tab, along with advil.(His orders) I felt fine, and it did relieve the pain.
